This Week’s FCS Football Betting Odds and Picks: Oct. 13, 2018

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The gravy train keeps chugging along. We have been crushing it with our plays at the lower level of college football betting. Our FCS football betting odds and picks have been undefeated for two straight weeks, and last week was our most impressive performance yet. Stony Brook and Towson combined to score 80 points, a mere 28.5 points more than the total, for an easy over. We were on the under in Villanova versus Maine, and that turned out to be a great pick too with the teams combining for a scant 23 points, well short of the 43.5-point total per the CFB betting odds.

Our best play was our pick of Elon to beat James Madison though. Somehow the Phoenix opened as a 30-point underdog on the NCAAF betting line against the Dukes, and even more incredibly, bettors initially loved James Madison. The line for that game went as high as 37.5 points before bettors regained their sanity, moving it down to 27.5 points by kickoff. Elon proved that the original line was incredibly off by pulling off the outright upset over James Madison on the road.

Chattanooga at Western Carolina Over 59

The Moccasins haven’t played many high-scoring games this year, but they haven’t played a pass defense as porous as the Catamounts. Western Carolina has been shredded through the air this season. They have the fourth-worst pass defense in the country in terms of yards allowed, letting opponents throw for over 315 yards per game.

That’s an absurd number in a conference with a lot of teams that run option-based offenses. VMI’s Jake Paladino threw for 491 yards and four touchdowns against this defense earlier in the year, while Devlin Hodges shredded them for 562 yards and six touchdowns. That latter game was indicative of what a good passer can do against this team, as Samford put up 66 points despite turning the ball over five times.

Nick Tiano is the fourth-leading passer in the country, and he can take advantage of this defense. Chattanooga doesn’t run much up-tempo, but the Mocs will be able to get some big chunk plays against this defense.

On the other side of the ball, Western Carolina has a very good offense, and that’s why we’re taking the over. The Catamounts have a diverse attack that throws opponents off their game, and they are 10th in the country in total offense with 489.8 yards a game. Chattanooga’s defense is sure to be a bit gassed after facing Wofford last week too, and the Mocs allowed 442 rushing yards in that one.

South Dakota State -15.5 vs. Youngstown State

The Penguins aren’t a very good team this year. They aren’t in the top 50 in total offense or total defense, and this line seems more based on respect and their name then anything else. Youngstown State is sitting at 2-3 this season, and the running game they used to rely on has seemingly collapsed. They have averaged just 2.9 yards per carry in conference play, and the Penguins have yet to play any of the conference heavyweights.

South Dakota State was surprisingly taken to overtime by Indiana State last week, but it seemed clear that it was a letdown situation for the Jackrabbits. They had fallen just short of knocking off North Dakota State the previous week, and that took the wind out of their sails a bit. Still, the Jackrabbits were up by 18 points heading into the fourth quarter before taking their foot off the gas pedal a bit too early, and they won’t make that same mistake a second time. We’ll see Taryn Christion putting up big numbers in this one.
