The Chicago White Sox have reached an agreement with free agent outfielder Austin Hays on a one-year contract worth $6 million, according to sources familiar with the negotiation. The agreement brings the veteran outfielder to the American League Central after spending the entirety of his major league career with the Baltimore Orioles.
Selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft by Baltimore, Hays made his major league debut in 2017. Over multiple seasons with the Orioles, he developed into a regular contributor in the outfield, known for his solid defensive abilities and right-handed bat. In 2023, Hays was selected as an All-Star for the first time, a reflection of his strong first-half performance.
While injuries have affected his availability in past seasons, Hays has generally provided consistent outfield defense and lineup versatility. He’s capable of playing all three outfield positions and has frequently been used in left and right field. Offensively, he has produced a blend of power and contact, contributing both home runs and doubles throughout his time in Baltimore.
For Chicago, the signing adds experience and depth to an outfield group that is in transition. Following roster changes and ongoing development of younger players, the White Sox have been active this offseason in seeking productive veterans to stabilize their lineup. Hays’ presence could provide a reliable option for manager Pedro Grifol as the team continues to retool its roster.
The deal gives Hays an opportunity to re-establish his value with regular playing time in a new environment. He will become a free agent again after the 2026 season unless further contract negotiations take place. The agreement is pending a physical and has not yet been formally announced by the club.
Hays joins a White Sox team looking to rebound from a difficult 2025 campaign. With spring training approaching, Chicago is working to finalize roster additions and prepare for the upcoming season.
