Counting Down The Most Impressive Strikers From The Bundesliga This Past Season

Robben probably would have led the German league in scoring had he stayed fit.

FC Bayern Munich once again stands at the top of the Bundesliga table and perhaps most impressive about their dominant run is the plus-62 goal differential they recorded this season.

It’s no surprise that veteran strikers like Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski were once again among the league’s leading scorers, but what was a surprise was the way that another  veteran forward was able to beat out both of them for the league scoring title despite missing significant amount of time down the stretch. Here is a look at the most impressive strikers from the Bundesliga this past season.

Alexander Meier, Eintracht Frankfurt

The 32-year-old Meier had never led the Bundesliga in goal scoring until this season when he managed to score a league leading 19 goals in just 26 games. His season was shortened because he was forced to miss the final seven contests with a knee injury that required surgery. Eintracht Frankfurt still finished in the middle of the pack in the table but that was mostly because of their defense. They allowed 62 goals this season, which was the third-most in the Bundesliga. Their minus-6 goal differential would have looked a lot worse if it wasn’t for their veteran scorer that led the way up front from them in the most productive season of his career.

Arjen Robben, Bayern Munich

Robben also missed significant time for Bayern Munich and probably would have led the way in scoring if he wasn’t forced to the sidelines for the final two months of the season due to injury. Robben ended up finishing with 17 goals in 21 games started to tie his teammate Lewandowski for the team-lead and second place in the Bundesliga. He also contributed seven assists, which tied him for seventh in the Bundesliga.

Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich

Lewandowski himself was limited to just 31 games in the Bundesliga this season but still managed to score 17 goals to earn a spot among the league’s most impressive strikers. He also added five assists. It’s somewhat of a shame for the fans of every other team in the league that Bayern is so deep and talented that they don’t need their top two strikers in the lineup for a full season to run away with a Bundesliga title but that was the case in 2015. The 26-year-old Lewandowski should once again be in the mix to challenge for the scoring title again next season as he returns to a very cushy fantasy situation at Bayern.

Bas Dost, VFL Wolfsburg

Vfl Wolfsburg finished second in the Bundesliga not only in the table but also in scoring. The latter is far more important to fantasy players and Bas Dost was one of the key reasons for the high goal tally. The 25 year old has earned his fair share of attention from Premier League suitors that have inquired about his services after he scored 16 goals in 21 Bundesliga games this season. He had plenty of help from standout Kevin De Bruyne, who led the Bundesliga with 20 assists, which was eight more than second place.

Wolfsburg is reportedly interested in earning a handsome price for Dost’s services, so it won’t be a shock to anyone when one of the top clubs from England pay a hefty price in order to acquire Dost from Germany.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Borussia Dortmund

The 25-year-old French international moved in to a tie with Dost for fourth in the Bundesliga goal scoring race with his 16th goal of the league season to help Dortmund beat Werder Bremmen 3-2 in their final game of the season. That helped them secure their spot in the Europa League for next year. Aubameyang led Dortmund in both goals and assists (six) this season and he was clearly the guy to own on this team. They only scored a total of 47 goals and he had more than a third of them. After such an impressive season, he’ll get plenty of attention early in drafts next year.
