England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening World Cup group game produced a notable postmatch scene when players and supporters joined together in a rendition of Oasis’ 1995 hit “Wonderwall” after the final whistle.

The song has remained in the public consciousness since its release, and Oasis’ reunion tour last summer helped revive its profile. England also submitted a list of songs to be played at the tournament before and after games, with “Wonderwall” included alongside Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” and The Beatles’ “Hey Jude.”

Spotify reported a 50% spike in streams of “Wonderwall” in the U.K. after the Croatia game, a boost linked to the full-time celebration that featured heavily on social media and in the stadium.

Several England players were visibly moved by the moment. Jude Bellingham joined in, and Harry Kane told the Lions’ Den podcast that singing “Wonderwall” with fans was “one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt,” calling it a special emotional connection. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said on the podcast that the team thrives off the supporters and expects more fans to arrive for the next matches. Midfielder Declan Rice told the BBC that being in Dallas and singing “Wonderwall” was something he could not explain and called it the biggest honour in football for him.

Noel Gallagher, who has previously said his allegiances lie with Ireland, gave his blessing for English fans to sing the song. TalkSPORT presenter Jason Cundy relayed a text from Gallagher saying, “For your information, that song belongs to the people,” and adding that he did not view it solely as his song and thought the moment was “brilliant.”
