After a rousing speech at the Golden Globe Awards this past Sunday, the country is stirring with speculation that Oprah Winfrey may use the moment to launch her political career.

There were numerous calls among Hollywood elites for Oprah to throw her hat in the ring for the 2020 Presidential Election. We have a long way to go before an official announcement one way or the other, but if she does run, she will certainly be after the Democratic Party nomination.

Whether or not she can win it, is another story.

BetDSI.eu has posted odds on just that story, which you can find below.

Will Oprah run for the presidency?

Before she can win the Democratic Party nomination, Oprah must first decide to run for the presidency. Although she has been asked several times, Oprah has never seemed to be interested in becoming president. She has flatly denied any intention of running for the Oval Office, and she did so again when asked about it backstage last Sunday.

There are reasons to believe that this time might be different though. Oprah has gotten more involved in politics over the past decade and has held fundraising events for Barack Obama and other Democratic Party candidates. She knows she would have a serious chance of winning if she was nominated, and that could sway her decision.

What is the Democratic Party field of contenders looking like in 2020?

It’s safe to say that there will be plenty of people looking to run against Donald Trump. Typically, there is an incumbency advantage for presidents running for a second term. That leads to a diluted field as the stars of the opposition party usually decide to bide their time until the next cycle. However, Trump is so unpopular and is seen as so weak that there will be no shortage of good candidates who try to grab the Democratic Party nomination.

Dozens of names have already been floated for the Democrats in 2020. Celebrities like The Rock, Stephen Colbert, Will Smith, Kanye West and more have flirted with the possibility of putting their name in the hat. Additionally, more mainstream candidates like Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Julian Castro and Joe Biden might decide to vie for the nomination too.

Despite all of this, Oprah could still fare very well. However, there are two candidates that would seriously damage her chances of winning if they were to run.

Michelle Obama was one of the most popular First Ladies that America has had. Like her husband, she has a background in law and has been rumored to have an interest in politics. She would have the support of a lot of the powerbrokers within the Democratic Party and would certainly take potential votes away from Oprah.

The even bigger threat to a potential Oprah candidacy is Kamala Harris. Harris is a rising star within the Democratic Party and is extremely popular among her constituents. Although Harris only recently became a Senator, she was well respected as the Attorney General of California and has already been appointed to a number of key committees in the Senate. Of all potential candidates serving in the government right now, she probably has the best chance of winning the Democratic Party nomination.

Oprah Primary Odds Prediction

It’s notoriously difficult to predict who the main contenders will be for the presidency this far out. We are still a year and a half away from the earliest announcements, and even then there is a lot of time for things to change.

Two of the last three presidential nominees were considered extreme longshots to win their party’s nomination when they announced their plans to run for the presidency. No one gave either Barack Obama nor Donald Trump much of a chance against the perceived party favorites, yet both men ended up winning the nomination and became POTUS.

It would take a substantial price to bet on Oprah to win the Democratic Party nomination at this point. There are too many variables for anyone to be the favorite, even someone as popular as Oprah. You should strongly consider betting the ‘No’ at +290 on this BetDSI prop.
