Wrestling News Roundup – 6.20.17

Professional wrestling is a constantly changing world, and with the sheer amount of content to watch every week, lots of announcements and changes are going to be made every day. Today’s news includes Triple H honoring a real hero, new merch for Breezango, the NJPW G1 Climax, and more.

Triple H Gives London Bridge Hero a WWE Championship
A few weeks ago in London, three men crashed a van into a crowd of people before exiting the vehicle and attacking people with knives. Charlie Guenigault, a London police officer, was off-duty while at the scene of the crime. Guenigault protected the potential victims by charging the three men, suffering stab wounds to the head, back, leg, and stomach. This would lead to him needing emergency surgery.

Since Guenigault was off-duty, he was in casual clothing – a Sami Zayn shirt to be exact. When WWE found out that he was a fan, Triple H flew out to London to award him with a signed WWE Championship belt. Along with Triple H calling Guenigault a “real hero,” Sami Zayn sent the police officer a personal video message for his gratitude.

Breezango Gets an Official T-Shirt
For the longest time, it seemed like Fandango and Tyler Breeze were destined to the on the bottom of the WWE totem pole. They have incredible talent, but their silly characters give them a smaller chance of holding a WWE Championship. Things started to turn around when they paired up as Breezango and started airing episodes of the Fashion Files every week on SmackDown Live. This success has led to them getting their very own t-shirt.

The shirt has a Fashion Police badge on the front with the phrase “You Have the Right to Remain Stylish” on the back. The design might not be the best that WWE has produced, but it is a good indicator that the higher-ups see great potential in Breezango.

Kairi Hojo Makes Her Way to WWE
Earlier this year, it was announced that Kairi Hojo signed a 3-year contract for WWE. Hojo, who has held numerous championships during her run in World Wonder Ring Stardom, finished up her remaining obligated dates for the promotion. In a now-deleted tweet by Stardom, Hojo was seen being dropped off at an Orlando airport, the same city as the WWE Performance Center. This is just in time for the Mae Young Classic (WWE’s 32-woman tournament), which is set to tape in the middle of July.

TLC Announced for the Raw Brand in October
In December 2016, SmackDown Live hosted TLC, which featured matches such as Becky Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss in a Tables Match. This year, WWE has announced that the tables, ladders, and chairs themed Pay-Per-View will return this October for the Raw Brand at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Since this show is switching brands, perhaps the Hell in a Cell Pay-Per-View will be switching to SmackDown Live.

New Japan Pro Wrestling Announces G1 Climax Competitors
For those who do not just watch WWE, New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) has announced the wrestlers competing in this year’s annual G1 Climax Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on July 17. Some names in the field may be familiar to fans of WWE, or more specifically, the Cruiserweight Classic. The winner of the tournament will earn an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match for 2018’s Wrestle Kingdom event on January 4.

Here are all of the competitors announced for the G1 Climax:

  • Togi Makabe, Michael Elgin, Juice Robinson, Minoru Suzuki, Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto, Hiroshi Tanahashi, YOSHI-HASHI, Kenny Omega, Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Tomohiro Ishii, Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, EVIL, Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Zack Sabre Jr., & Kota Ibushi

Shelton Benjamin to Return to WWE?
According to Pro Wrestling Sheet, Shelton Benjamin is in talks with WWE to make a return to the ring. After the brand extension last year, Benjamin was advertised to return to SmackDown Live before WWE medical staff discovered a shoulder injury that required surgery. Because of the injury, Benjamin never officially signed with WWE, but he has been cleared for action ever since March. Pro Wrestling Sheet says that the deal is almost finished and the former Intercontinental Champion would most likely be coming to SmackDown Live.
