The Women’s Super League (WSL) has expressed serious concerns about the timing of the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup, scheduled to take place from January 5 to January 30, 2028. The WSL highlighted that the tournament’s dates could have significant negative impacts on the domestic league and raise substantial issues regarding player welfare.

In a statement, WSL officials warned that the timing of the new FIFA competition overlaps with key periods of the English domestic season. The January window is traditionally a busy part of the WSL calendar, featuring domestic matches that are crucial to the league’s competitive balance. By placing the Club World Cup squarely in the middle of the month, teams could be forced to compete without their top players, should those athletes be called up for international club duty.

WSL representatives also voiced concerns about the toll on players’ physical and mental well-being. The condensed schedule may result in limited recovery time between club and international commitments, increasing the risk of injuries and burnout. Officials emphasized the need for governing bodies to align global calendars in a way that prioritizes both competition integrity and athlete health.

According to the WSL, discussions with FIFA and other stakeholders are ongoing in hopes of finding a resolution that minimizes disruption. Suggestions include modifying league schedules or adjusting international tournament dates, though no concrete decisions have been announced.

The potential introduction of a Club World Cup for women marks a major development in the global football landscape, aiming to elevate the stature of club-based women’s competitions worldwide. However, the WSL’s response reflects a growing need for coordinated scheduling practices among different football authorities to ensure successful integration of new tournaments into an already crowded calendar.

The WSL reaffirmed its support for the growth of the women’s game but emphasized that any expansion in the global football calendar must be implemented responsibly, with careful attention to its impact on domestic leagues and the athletes who power them.
