WWE NXT Recap: New #1 Contenders

Last week on NXT, there was only one match for the entire show. Sami Zayn faced Samoa Joe in a 2-out-of-3 falls match to determine the #1 Contender for Finn Balor’s NXT Championship. The match would end up going on for about 45 minutes, and after a score of 1-1, Samoa Joe made Sami Zayn pass out with the Coquina Clutch to win and become the new #1 contender.

Tonight, we have other parts of the roster to focus on, including a #1 Contenders match for the NXT Tag Team Championship between American Alpha and The Vaudevillains. Also, Bayley and Asuka will take on Eva Marie and Nia Jax.

In-ring Segment
Sami Zayn comes to the ring, one week after having his battle with Samoa Joe. He starts talking about NXT TakeOver: Dallas (April 1st, on the WWE Network), and is interrupted by William Regal. Because of his hard work, according to William Regal, he will face one of the best in the world in Dallas: NXT’s newest signee, “The King of Strong Style,” Shinsuke Nakamura.

The Hype Bros vs. Angelo Dawkins & Kenneth Crawford
Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley (The Hype Bros) have gotten a good amount of exposure over the last few months of NXT, and this match should build their momentum even more.

After a discus punch to Kenneth Crawford, Mojo Rawley tags in Zack Ryder, and they hit the Hype Ryder (Rough Ryder from the top rope combined with a spinebuster) for the win. Winners: The Hype Bros

Backstage Segment
Emma and Dana Brooke run into Deonna Purazzo backstage, and start insulting her, as they normally do. Purazzo says that she will put a stop to the “Emma-lution” in a match tonight.

Emma (w/Dana Brooke) vs. Deonna Purazzo
Emma has been in high-profile feuds in NXT, between starting the Divas Revolution when she faced Paige for the NXT Women’s Championship, and having great matches with Asuka. If Deonna Purazzo can get a win, and stop the “Emma-lution” like she hopes, it would immediately give her tons of momentum.

Well, Purazzo didn’t stop the Emma-lution. Emma locks in the Emma Lock (which needs a better name) for the win. Winner (via submission): Emma

Tommaso Ciampa vs. Jesse Sorenson
Jesse Sorenson and Tommaso Ciampa are both regulars, but what’s good for Ciampa is that Sorenson loses all the time.

After locking in a modified armbreaker, Tommaso Ciampa makes Jesse Sorenson tap out for the win. Winner (via submission): Tommaso Ciampa

Nia Jax & Eva Marie vs. Bayley & Asuka
About a month ago, Bayley successfully defended the NXT Women’s Championship against Carmella. After the match, both competitors would be attacked by Eva Marie and Nia Jax. Asuka would interrupt the beatdown and make the save, right before signaling to Bayley that she wants the NXT Women’s Championship.

While Eva Marie is near the ring apron, Asuka kicks her in the back of the head, leading to a Bayley-to-Belly on Eva Marie for the win. Winners: Bayley & Asuka

After the match, NXT General Manager William Regal announces that Asuka is the new #1 Contender to the NXT Women’s Championship. Asuka will face Bayley for the Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: Dallas on April 1st.

Interview
Tom Philips and Corey Graves are interviewing one of NXT’s most recent signings, “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived,” Austin Aries. The next time we will see Austin Aries on NXT television will be at NXT TakeOver: Dallas, where he will take on Baron Corbin. Aries says that in Dallas, he will teach Baron Corbin a lesson.

American Alpha vs. The Vaudevillains – #1 Contender’s Match (NXT Tag Team Championship)
American Alpha is perhaps one of the most impressive teams that NXT has seen in a long time, with Chad Gable and Jason Jordan being two of the most solid in-ring performers WWE has to offer. Their opponents, The Vaudevillains, are former NXT Tag Team Champions, and defeating them will not be an easy task.

Jason Jordan takes advantage of a blind tag, and double teams with Chad Gable to hit a launching back suplex to win the match, and become the #1 Contenders to The Revival’s NXT Tag Team Championship. Winners, and NEW #1 Contenders: American Alpha
