WWE Payback 2016 Recap: A New Era

Tonight features the first Pay-Per-View since WresteMania 32, and there are a lot of new faces and new match-ups. Roman Reigns will defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against AJ Styles, and Vince McMahon will decide who is in control of Monday Night Raw.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin
Over the past few weeks, Baron Corbin has made it his mission to attack Dolph Ziggler at every opportunity he has. Dolph Ziggler looks to get revenge on Corbin tonight, while Corbin looks to get his second main roster Pay-Per-View win (the first was the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal). With how much Corbin has been featured since his debut, it is surprising that this match is on the pre-show.

Baron Corbin launches Ziggler into the ring post, and takes way too much time getting to the Showoff. Ziggler takes advantage and rolls up Corbin for a surprising victory. Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Predicted Winner – Baron Corbin (0/1)

Kalisto (c) vs. Ryback – United States Championship
Kalisto successfully defended the United States Championship against “The Big Guy” at WrestleMania 32, so normally Ryback would not get another shot. However, Ryback defeated Kalisto in a non-title match a few weeks ago, so he has earned another title shot for tonight.

Kalisto moves out of the way of a splash attempt by Ryback, and hits the Salida Del Sol to retain his title. Winner, and STILL United States Champion: Kalisto

Predicted Winner: Ryback (0/2)

Enzo & Big Cass vs. The Vaudevillains – #1 Contender’s Match (WWE Tag Team Championship)
Before the match starts, The New Day comes down to ringside and sits in bean bag chairs to scout this match. This match is the result of a tag team tournament, with both of these teams defeating two other teams each to make it to the finals. Whoever wins this match will become the #1 Contenders to the New Day’s Tag Team Championship.

During the match, Enzo Amore had a nasty spot on the ropes, and the referee has had to call the match off. Result: No Contest

Prediction is null and void due to injury.

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
Owens and Zayn have been wrestling with and against each other for over a decade, and their feud makes its way to their first singles match on the main roster. It spans from their days on the independent circuit, to NXT, to WrestleMania 32. This match is the embodiment of the name “Payback” because Kevin Owens essentially got rid of Zayn so he could get further in his career.

Owens counters the Helluva Kick with a superkick to Zayn, then hits the Pop-up Powermbomb to pick up the victory. Winner: Kevin Owens

After the match, Owens throws Zayn out of the ring, and orders Byron Saxton to come into the ring and give an interview. Owens wants to pursue the Intercontinental Championship (that he never got his rematch for), and will join the commentary for the Miz’s title defense.

Predicted Winner: Sami Zayn (0/3)

The Miz (c) (w/Maryse) vs. Cesaro – Intercontinental Championship
The Miz (with the help of Maryse) defeated Zack Ryder to win the Intercontinental Championship the night after WrestleMania. Since then, Cesaro would defeat Kevin Owens to become the #1 Contender to the title. After some promos and movie references, we have this match tonight.

During the match, Sami Zayn appears out of nowhere and attacks Kevin Owens on the commentary table, and the fight goes to the ring. The fight distracts the referee while The Miz taps out to the Crossface, and Cesaro has to break the hold and knock Owens and Zayn off of the apron. The Miz takes advantage, rolling up Cesaro and using the tights as leverage to retain his title. Winner, and STILL Intercontinental Champion: The Miz

Predicted Winner: The Miz (1/4)

Chris Jericho vs. Dean Ambrose
This match has come to be because Dean Ambrose took over the Highlight Reel several weeks ago and Jericho got mad. Tonight, Ambrose looks to get #Payback on Jericho for attacking him over the last few weeks.

Ambrose counters the Lionsault, and just barely locks in Jericho for Dirty Deeds to pick up the victory. Winner: Dean Ambrose

Predicted Winner: Chris Jericho (1/5)

Charlotte (c) (w/Ric Flair) vs. Natalya (w/Bret Hart) – WWE Women’s Championship
Natalya faced Charlotte for the Women’s Champioship on Raw three weeks ago, but Ric Flair pulled the referee out of the ring, giving Natalya a disqualification win, and keeping the Women’s Championship around Charlotte’s waist. To even the odds, and hopefully prevent Ric Flair from cheating, Natalya has Bret Hart in her corner.

Charlotte locks in the Sharpshooter and Charles Robinson rings the bell akin to the Montreal Screwjob. Winner, and STILL WWE Women’s Champion: Charlotte

Predicted Winner: Charlotte (2/6)

In-ring Segment
Vince McMahon comes down to the ring to determine who will be in control of Monday Night Raw: Shane McMahon or the Authority. Shane and Stephanie spend about 15 minutes trying to convince Vince to make them in charge of Raw. Well it kind of worked, since they are both in charge of Raw now.

Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles – WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Reigns captured his third World Heavyweight Championship when he defeated Triple H in the main event of WrestleMania 32. The next night, Styles defeated Cesaro, Chris Jericho, and Kevin Owens to become the new #1 Contender. What seemed to be a straightforward title feud got turned upside down when Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson made their WWE debut. They have been “helping” Styles by attacking Reigns over the past few weeks, but Styles says that he has nothing to do with the attacks. Along with defending his title, Reigns has to worry about Gallows and Anderson coming out of nowhere.

Styles hits Reigns with a Phenomenal Forearm sending him through the announce table, but picks up a count-out victory, leaving Reigns the champion. The match ends, but Shane McMahon restarts the match with no count-outs.

Reigns unintentionally low blows AJ Styles while countering an aerial attack, and Stephanie McMahon now restarts the match for the second time, now with no disqualifications.

Reigns sets up a Superman Punch, but Gallows and Anderson pull Styles out of the ring, and lay Reigns out in the middle of the ring for Styles to take advantage. After the attack, the Usos start brawling with Gallows and Anderson.

Reigns dodges another Phenomenal Forearm attempt, and hits an emphatic spear on AJ Styles to retain the title. Winner, and STILL WWE World Heavyweight Champion: Roman Reigns

Predicted Winner: Roman Reigns (3/7)

After the match, Shane and Stephanie McMahon decide that since this match was so good, AJ Styles deserves a rematch. At Extreme Rules, Styles will have his second opportunity to challenge Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
