WWE Smackdown Recap: A New Day for Y2AJ

Tonight’s episode of Thursday Night Smackdown features the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Triple H. “The Game” is presumably on tonight’s show to explain his actions on Monday Night Raw earlier this week, when he beat up Roman Reigns so bad after his match that he busted his nose. Also, Becky Lynch will face Natalya, and perhaps we will see the Intercontinental Champion, Kevin Owens, who was absent on Monday Night Raw this week.

Opening Segment
Speaking of Triple H, here he is. Smackdown for the last several weeks has been starting off with a match, as opposed to Raw’s usual start of a fifteen minute promo. Now that Triple H is here, so is the fifteen minute promo.

Triple H talks about how good he is for a little while (like he needs it), and that is really about it.

The Lucha Dragons, Neville, & Dolph Ziggler vs. The League of Nations
Man, I hate the League of Nations. They get booed against everybody they face, and although that may be good since they are heels, if you are a good heel you will still get some cheers (just listen to the reactions that Kevin Owens gets). The good news is that King Barrett is actually participating in a match for the first time in what feels like forever.

A referee distraction leads to Sheamus hitting a Brogue Kick on Neville for the win. Winners: The League of Nations

Backstage Segment
Kevin Owens is being interviewed by Renee Young, who announces that he will grant Dean Ambrose his rematch tonight. The only problem is, Dean Ambrose is not at Smackdown, because he is probably recovering from the beating that Brock Lesnar gave him on Monday Night Raw. Owens thinks he has the night off, but instead he has a match with a very angry Big Show.

Jimmy Uso (w/Jey Uso) vs. D-Von Dudley (w/Bubba Ray Dudley)
A few weeks ago, The Dudley Boyz teamed up with the Usos to take on the New Day and Mark Henry in a tables match. The Usos and the Dudleys ended up winning the match, but instead of celebrating, the Dudleys turned on the Usos and put them each through a table. Tonight, Jimmy Uso looks to get some revenge.

Unfortunately, a distraction from Bubba Ray Dudley leads to a roll-up by D-Von Dudley, getting the win in an extremely short match. Winner: D-Von Dudley

Backstage Segment
Chris Jericho and AJ Styles (Y2AJ accoring to Adam Rose) are talking in the locker room, with hopes of gaining the WWE Tag Team Championships. Y2AJ takes on the New Day later on tonight, and they found a third tag team partner: “The World’s Strongest Man”, Mark Henry.

Big Show vs. Kevin Owens
What is interesting about this match is that it is a Big Show match that we have not seen before. For pretty much the entire time Kevin Owens has been on the main roster, Big Show has also been a heel, so they have had no reason to face each other. Now that Big Show has recently turned face (no surprise there), this is a fresh match-up.

After using the top rope to hit Big Show with a low blow, Kevin Owens picks up the count-out victory. Winner: Kevin Owens

Becky Lynch vs. Natalya
There is currently an open position for the 1# Contender to Charlotte’s Divas Championship. Both Natalya and Becky Lynch can make a statement with this match.

Unfortunately, Naomi and Tamina interrupt and ruin everything by attacking Natalya. Winner (via disqualification): Natalya

After the match, Sasha Banks makes the save, and the Divas Champion comes out with a big announcement. On Monday Night Raw, Sasha Banks will take on Becky Lynch to determine the #1 Contender to the Divas Championship, and Charlotte will be at ringside.

R-Truth vs. Heath Slater (w/Social Outcasts)
Before the match, Goldust comes down to be at a “netural corner” to watch hopefully his future tag team partner.

Bo Dallas distracts the referee, and Goldust hits Heath Slater, leading to R-Truth getting the backslide pin for the victory. Winner: R-Truth

After this success, the chances of Golden Truth happening seem to be a little greater.

The New Day vs. Chris Jericho, AJ Styles, & Mark Henry
The New Day is one of the greatest tag teams of recent memory, winning pretty much every match they are in. Their opponents are some of the best singles competitors that the world has seen, all with tremendous accomplishments. This match-up makes me realize how cool a Kofi Kingston/AJ Styles feud would be.

AJ Styles counters Xavier Woods and locks in the Calf Crusher for the win. Winners: AJ Styles, Chris Jericho, & Mark Henry

That is all for this episode of Smackdown. Tune in to Monday Night Raw for the return of The Undertaker, who will face Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 32.
