WWE SummerSlam Recap: Ups & Downs

Tonight is SummerSlam, an overloaded show that will go too long for you to keep your excitement for the main event. Sure, the matches are going to be great, but NXT constantly put on shows that fans are into beginning to end because they have a decent length. The card is stacked with bouts like Cena/Styles, Lesnar/Orton, and Balor/Rollins. There is sure to be something for everyone to like, and something for everyone to hate.

Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho
Enzo Amore’s gift of gab has gotten him a couple of enemies in Jericho and Owens. After the two teams clearly expressed their hatred of one another, they set up a match in the backyard of the Realest Guys in the Room.

Owens disposes of Big Cass outside the ring, and it gives Jeri-KO the opportunity to hit a Pop-Up Codebreaker double team on Enzo Amore to put him away. Winners: Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho

Predicted Winners: Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho (1/1)

Sasha Banks (c) vs. Charlotte – WWE Women’s Championship
Sasha Banks won the Women’s Championship on the first Monday Night Raw after the brand split. Charlotte had held the title for a little over half of a year, and Banks was able to overcome the Dana Brooke disadvantage to earn what is rightfully hers.

Sasha Banks attempt the Bank Statement, and Charlotte shifts the weight to cover Banks to regain the belt that she lost only a month ago. Winner, and NEW Women’s Champion: Charlotte

Even though Banks lost the title, she took several bumps that could have injured her, so hopefully she won’t need to be out of action.

Predicted Winner: Sasha Banks (1/2)

The Miz (c) (w/Maryse) vs. Apollo Crews – Intercontinental Championship
Apollo Crews won a triple threat match to become the #1 Contender, but the Miz couldn’t care less. The Miz barley acknowledged Crews going into this match, calling him Apollo Creed instead.

The Miz dodges a corner splash attempt, and Crews hits his head on the ring post. The Miz takes advantage to hit the Skull Crushing Finale and retain the title. Winner, and STILL Intercontinental Champion: The Miz

Predicted Winner: The Miz (2/3)

John Cena vs. AJ Styles
AJ Styles defeated John Cena at Money in the Bank earlier this year, but it was thanks to the help of The Club. Tonight, Styles has to go at it alone to defeat Cena again and prove that he can take Cena’s spot at the top.

AJ Styles kicks out of an Attitude Adjustment from the second rope, and hits the Styles Clash followed up by the Phenomenal Forearm to pick up the victory. This gives Styles two victories over John Cena, which is huge for Styles’s career, especially in WWE. Winner: AJ Styles

Predicted Winner: AJ Styles (3/4)

Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods (c) (w/Jon Stewart) vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson – WWE Tag Team Championship
Due to Big E’s absence from ringpostitis, Jon Stewart of The Daily Show fame takes his place at ringside during this match. The New Day is the only team that has been so on their game over the last year that The Club immediately joined WWE as credible contenders to the titles.

Gallows and Anderson look to give Jon Stewart a case of ringpostitis, when Big E makes his return and throws the challengers all over ringside. Winners (via disqualification): Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson

Predicted Winners: Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson (4/5)

Dean Ambrose (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler – WWE Championship
Ziggler won a Six Pack Challenge on SmackDown to become the #1 Contender to the WWE Championship, and Ambrose has played mind games with the Showoff ever since.

Dean Ambrose prevents Ziggler from hitting a facebuster from the top rope, and immediately hits Dirty Deeds to put Ziggler away and retain the WWE Championship. Winner, and STILL WWE Champion: Dean Ambrose

Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose (5/6)

Naomi, Carmella, & Becky Lynch vs. Natalya, Alexa Bliss & Nikki Bella
Eva Marie, as usual, could not make it to this match because of her suspension she needed to recuperate by taking a vacation in the British Isles. Instead, Natalya and Alexa Bliss found a new partner: Nikki Bella. Nikki Bella has been on the shelf recovering from neck surgery. After training for months, she makes her in-ring return tonight.

Both teams brawl, and it leaves Nikki Bella and Carmella in the ring. Bella hits a TKO on Carmella for the win in her surprising return to the ring. Winners: Natalya, Alexa Bliss, & Nikki Bella

Predicted Winners: Naomi, Carmella, & Becky Lynch (5/7)

Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins – WWE Universal Championship
Finn Balor debuted on the July 25th edition of Monday Night Raw, and won two matches (including a singles match against Roman Reigns) to earn a spot in this match to become the first-ever WWE Universal Champion. Seth Rollins was gifted the spot in this match, but has shown over the last year that he deserves to be in the main event title picture.

Finn Balor dropkicks Seth Rollins into the turnbuckles twice, then follows it up with the Coup de Grace to win his first main roster Pay-Per-View match, and to become the inaugural WWE Universal Champion. Winner, and FIRST-EVER Universal Champion: Finn Balor

Predicted Winner: Finn Balor (6/8)

Rusev (c) (w/Lana) vs. Roman Reigns – United States Championship
As soon as Roman Reigns gets to the ring, Rusev attacks him and continues the assault outside the ring. Reigns turns the tables on the champion, and officials have to separate the two. While Reigns walks to the back, officials help Rusev up. Jojo announced that Rusev is unable to compete, so there will be no United States Championship match. Result: No Contest

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton
The Beast vs. The Viper. The Conqueror vs. The Legend Killer. Suplex City vs. Viperville. Whatever you want to call it, this is a match 15 years in the making.

Orton kicks out of an F-5, then Lesnar clobbers Orton in the head enough times to bust him open. Orton is in bad enough shape for the match to end by TKO. Winner: Brock Lesnar

This match proved that Brock Lesnar destroying everyone he faces is worn out, and a waste of time. As a SummerSlam main event, I would say this was a huge disappointment.

Predicted Winner: Randy Orton (6/9)
