The New York Yankees now have two 6-foot-7 position players on their roster, the first time a major league club has done so, according to MLB researcher Sarah Langs.
The roster change comes as the Yankees called up Spencer Jones to replace Jasson Dominguez, who will miss a few weeks with a left shoulder sprain, the report says. ESPN ranks Jones No. 5 in the Yankees’ farm system.
Jones joins reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge in matching the same listed height, a combination that the researcher flagged as unprecedented in MLB. The promotion of Jones contributed to a lineup measurement that the report identifies as the second-tallest in the majors, trailing only the Baltimore Orioles.
At Triple-A this season, Jones is hitting .258 with 11 home runs and a .958 OPS, statistics the Yankees elevated when making the roster move. Those numbers accompanied the decision to bring him to New York to fill the vacancy created by Dominguez’s shoulder issue, per the report.
The timing of the call-up puts Jones on the roster as the Yankees prepare to play the Milwaukee Brewers on the road on Friday night, the first game of a three-game series, the report notes. The club’s depth and lineup configuration will be monitored as Jones steps into a major league role and Judge continues with the big-league club.
