Most Profitable College Football Teams To Bet On This Season

Iowa State Cyclones

The Alabama Crimson Tide finally faltered in last week’s Iron Bowl loss to Auburn. While Alabama had been a lock to win most of its games while going 11-1 this season, it was a much different story when it came to betting them on the point spread as they have a 5-7 record ATS this year. Despite their excellent overall win total, Alabama didn’t rank among the most profitable teams to bet on. Here is a look at the most profitable college football teams to bet on this season.

Iowa State Cyclones

ATS Record This Season: 10-1-1

While Iowa State’s 7-5 record straight up isn’t nearly as impressive as what the Badgers have done overall, it’s impossible to argue against their record against the spread. The Cyclones are the only team in the country to cover in 10 games with a 10-2 record against the spread this season. Iowa State’s 83.3-percent cover rate has made them the most profitable team to bet on ATS this season. Despite their mediocre overall record, signature wins over Oklahoma and TCU as significant underdogs have made them a profitable team to bet on straight up as well this season.

Fresno State Bulldogs

ATS Record This Season: 9-2-1

One of the most underrated teams to bet on in college football this season comes from the Mountain West in Fresno State. The Bulldogs have posted a 9-3 record straight up. Meanwhile, their 9-2-1 record against the spread represents the second-best cover percentage in the nation behind only Iowa State this season. Fresno State is currently listed as a 10-point underdog for its Mountain West Championship game date with the Boise State Broncos this upcoming Saturday. It will be interesting to see if they can add to their impressive year as one of the most profitable college teams to bet on by at least covering in their biggest game of the season this weekend.

Buffalo Bulls

ATS Record This Season: 9-3

The Bulls have been one of the biggest surprises this season. Of course, they aren’t going to get much national acclaim but they are going bowling. That’s impressive considering they were 2-10 last year. As you might recall, the Bulls entered the season with few expectations. Their only wins last year came against Army in overtime and Akron. That’s why they were so undervalued on the point spread. However, this year they have been a surprise. They are 6-6 and were one of the few teams to be Florida Atlantic, if you can believe that. They ended the season on a three-game winning streak and will now go bowl. On top of that, they covered a lot of spreads this year, which made them a bettor’s best friend.

Northwestern Wildcats

ATS Record This Season: 9-3

Speaking of underrated teams to bet on, the Wildcats wrapped up the season with seven straight victories to close out the year with a 9-3 record straight up and a 9-3 record against the spread. Northwestern turned a lot of heads with its strong finish while helping whoever had faith in them make a lot of money to close out the year. While they won’t play in this week’s Big Ten Championship game, the Wildcats will finish the year with a 75.0-percent cover rate ATS that ranks third in the country behind only Iowa State and Fresno State this season. Northwestern clearly deserves a ton of credit for surprising as one of the most profitable college football teams to bet on this season.

Wisconsin Badgers

ATS Record This Season: 8-4

The Badgers have been among the biggest surprises of the season with a 12-0 record straight up and an 8-4 record against the spread this season. Wisconsin has played some of its best football in its biggest games including back-to-back double-digit wins over Iowa and Michigan en route to a Big Ten Championship game appearance. The Badgers own the nation’s second-ranked scoring defense, which has allowed just 14.0 points per game this season. Wisconsin will lean heavily on its defense once again this week as a 5.5-point underdog against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship game.
