American Idol Recap: Duets and Eliminations

american idol

On tonight’s episode of American Idol, Bebe Rexha, Lea Michele, Allen Stone, Cam, Rachel Platten, Colbie Caillat, and Banners are the guest performers. Five singers will be eliminated tonight after the duets.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson is being paired with Bebe Rexha and he’ll be stepping out of his comfort zone here as he’s paired with a pop artist. I like Caleb a lot in this competition. He’s got a great personality and a great voice. Singing “Meant to Be,” he already sounds comfortable and great. I like the way they sound together, so this is working out nicely. He is one of my favorites in this competition.

Ada Vox is singing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked with Lea Michele. Wow, great hair Ada, but this is a singing competition. I like the harmony between Ada and Lea. Great job Ada. Wow, standing ovation for Ada.

Next up is Maddie Poppe and Colbie Caillat, who actually auditioned for American Idol twice. Singing “Bubbly,” Maddie is once again nervous. Okay, if nerves keep making her sing like a freakin’ rock star then keep those nerves going. She’s amazing.

Teaming up with Banners is Ron Bultonngez singing “Someone to You.” Ron talks about his nerves and forgetting the words and playing his guitar. He’s really out of his comfort zone without his guitar and singing a song that isn’t his forte. Ron sounds a little shaky in the beginning. It was okay for me. Katy says it wasn’t perfect, but it was fun.

Amelia Hammer Harris is singing with Bebe Rexha now (who also auditioned for American Idol) and they are dueting with “Me, Myself and I.” They don’t do a lot of harmonies together, but Amelia sounds great. Katy calls her a star and hopes for more time with Amelia. Luke says she’s held her own with a major star.

Cam and Shannon O’Hara are up next and is singing “Burning House.” Shannon says she’s nervous about her performance. Lionel can be seen saying “wow” when Shannon sings with Cam. Shannon is the definite dark horse in this competition if she makes it to the next round. I don’t think she realizes how good she really is.

Next is Alyssa Raghu and Banners singing Coldplay’s “Yellow.” I like this Alyssa so much better than the one who wore a gown the other night. She seems like a fun 15-year-old performer. Keep this side of you going Alyssa. Katy says “give us a couple more notes,” and I’m not sure what that means. Lionel wasn’t crazy about it and felt that she didn’t stand out. Luke said just to keep delivering your style.

Singing next is Marcio Donaldson and Allen Stone. First, Marcio finds out that he was supposed to sing with Toni Braxton but she can’t perform because she’s sick. He’s happy that Allen Stone is his partner singing “What’s Going On,” by Marvin Gaye and they sound great. Marcio’s smile is infectious and his facial expressions are great. He seems so comfortable this week under the circumstances. Great performance. Lionel loved it. Katy says “I don’t know what you did, but you arrived.”

Jurnee is singing “Run to You” with Lea Michele, who says she started to cry when Jurnee started singing. The blending is fabulous. Jurnee is amazing and to keep up with Lea Michele is incredible. Luke said it was like they were together forever and Jurnee said ‘that’s insane.”

Garrett Jacobs and Colbie Caillat are singing “Lucky.” I think Garrett is an underdog in this competition so let’s see if he can pull it out. I think Garrett does better with a slower song and I think was one of his better performances. Katy says “I believe you’re super cool now.”

Up next is the bubbly Mara Justine with Rachel Platten, singing “Fight Song.” Rachel is so inspirational. Wow, they sound a lot alike and that’s a true compliment to Mara. The harmony was beautiful. Mara absolutely shined in this performance. Fantastic.

The final performance features Effie Passero and Cam. Effie had the change of performers too and is stepping out of her own comfort zone to sing country. They sang “Diane” and Effie did a fabulous job with this so I don’t know why she’s worried. I honestly felt like I was watching an ACM performance with the two of them. Lionel says she’s “on fire.”

Now it’s time to see who moves on:
Mara Justine
Jurnee
Maddie Poppe
Ada Vox
Caleb Hutchinson (yes!)
Garrett Jacobs (that one stumped me)
Marcio Donaldson

Wow. What a tough night. These singers were great tonight. I honestly think that Effie or Shannon should have made it instead of Garrett.

Next week it’s America’s voting time on American Idol! Next week 14 perform and four go home.
