CFL Grey Cup Pick: Calgary Stampeders Favored to Win Over Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Jon Cornish and the Calgary Stampeders enter the Grey Cup as eight-point favorites over Hamilton.

CFL Grey Cup Pick: The 102nd Grey Cup takes place in Vancouver, British Columbia on Sunday with the Calgary Stampeders favored against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Both teams won big last week to reach the title game as the Tiger-Cats routed Montreal while the Stampeders dominated Edmonton. Let’s take a look at Sunday’s game, the current CFL betting odds and CFL predictions.

Game Odds: Calgary Stampeders (-8), total 52

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-9 SU, 10-9 ATS)

The Tiger-Cats defeated Montreal last week to reach the title game. The Tiger-Cats were great at home this season but on the road they didn’t have nearly as much success. The team was fourth in the league in scoring and fifth in defense so it is hard to get too excited about their chances of winning on Sunday.

Calgary Stampeders (16-3 SU, 13-5-1 ATS)

The Stampeders were great all season and they rolled over Edmonton last week to reach the title game. Bo Levi Mitchell just continues to win games and the offense has been great all season as they averaged 28 points per game which was the top mark in the league. The defense was second in the league, allowing just 19 points per game.

Game Notes

This game is all about the Hamilton defense against Calgary running back Jon Cornish. If they can slow him down they have a chance. If not, this game will be a blowout. The Stampeders won both regular season meetings against Hamilton by scores of 10-7 and 30-20 but both of those games took place more than three months ago and Cornish didn’t play in either of the games. The Tiger-Cats also didn’t have quarterback Zach Collaros in those games.

“It’s the same playbook,” Stamps head coach Hufnagel said, “They’re doing the same stuff and we’re doing the same stuff. There’s just a different flavor to it because of the people who are playing the game. Everyone evolves throughout the season. We haven’t played them since August 16. That’s a lot of football they’ve played and a lot of football we’ve played.”

It will be the second straight appearance in the Grey Cup for Hamilton who lost last year to Saskatchewan while Calgary last played in the title game in 2012 when they lost to Toronto. The Stampeders are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 playoff games. The Over is 7-3 in the Tiger-Cats last 10 playoff games. The Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in this series.

CFL Predictions

It is hard to envision anything other than a Calgary win so we’ll lay the points and take the Stampeders to win the Grey Cup.
