Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals Free Preview 07/27/18

The St. Louis Cardinals are prepared to battle against the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium. NBC Sports Chicago will be televising the action and the game is slated to get underway at 8:15 p.m. ET.

Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals Odds

Vegas is listing St. Louis (-115) as the favorite over Chicago (+105). The total sits at 8.5 runs and bettors can wager on the over for -125 and the under for +105. Bettors can also wager on the game’s runline with the current odds sitting at Cubs +1.5 runs (-200) and Cardinals -1.5 runs (+170).

The Cubs are 60-42 SU and are 52-49 against the spread (ATS). The team hasn’t moved the needle a whole lot this year, gaining 1.0 unit for gamblers taking the moneyline and 4.8 units ATS. Chicago is 3-4 ATS over its last seven games and the total has gone over in four of those seven. The Cardinals, on the other hand, are 51-51 SU and 50-52 ATS. The team’s lost 10.9 units for moneyline bettors and 6.5 units ATS. St. Louis has covered the spread four times in its last seven games and the total has gone over in five of those seven.

Cardinals games have had an over/under record of 48-50-4 in 2018. Chicago has an over/under record of 48-52-1.

Mike Montgomery will get the nod for the visiting Cubs. The southpaw Montgomery is 3-3 with a 3.73 ERA and 51 strikeouts. He’s 0-0 with five strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA against St. Louis this year.

The Cardinals will turn to righty Luke Weaver (5-9, 4.79 ERA) to the mound. Weaver has 98 strikeouts and 41 walks to his credit, as well as a WHIP of 1.38. Weaver is 0-2 with seven strikeouts and a 9.75 ERA over three starts against Chicago this year.

As a unit, St. Louis’ pitching staff has allowed 4.4 runs per game overall in 2018. Its starting pitching staff has a 3.46 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings. The bullpen has a 4.72 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 8.4 K/9. In 52 divisional games, Cardinals starters have an ERA of 3.45 and the bullpen’s ERA is 4.94.

St. Louis’ hitters have produced 4.5 runs per outing, including 4.6 per game against divisional foes and 3.2 per game over their last five. The team has a slash-line of .234/.320/.366 over its last five contests and is 2-3 SU during that stretch.

The Cardinals’ offense has been led by outfielder Marcell Ozuna and first baseman Jose Martinez. Ozuna is hitting .261/.306/.371 with 10 home runs, 51 RBIs and 39 runs scored, and Martinez is hitting .295 with 13 homers, 57 RBIs and 35 runs.

In the visiting dugout, Chicago’s pitchers have allowed 4.1 runs per game and its starting pitchers own a 4.04 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 7.60 K/9. The bullpen has an ERA of 3.29, along with a K/9 of 8.84.

Cubs hitters have slashed .266/.349/.423 on their way to 5.1 runs scored per game in 2018, including 4.6 runs per game against divisional foes and 3.6 per game over the team’s last five outings (3-2 SU).

Second baseman Javier Baez and left fielder Albert Almora Jr. have led Chicago’s hitters. Baez is slashing .294/.326/.550 with 19 home runs, 74 RBIs, 63 runs and 19 stolen bases, while Almora Jr. is hitting .316/.353/.432 with four homers, 30 RBIs and 50 runs scored.

The Cubs have lost 7.3 units and are 37-39 ATS when facing a right-handed starting pitcher this season. The over has hit in 37 of those games, compared to 38 that’ve gone under against righties. On the other hand, the Cardinals have lost 3.9 units and are 13-14 ATS when facing a left-handed starting pitcher. The over has hit in 16 of those games, compared to 11 that’ve gone under.
