College tennis players win at UNM’s pro tennis tournament

Olle Wallin defeated Maciej Rajsik in the ITF Albuquerque 15K singles final on Sunday at UNM’s McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium, one week after taking home his first-ever professional championship on the Texas Tech University courts. His singles victory came the day after two UNM athletes, Alex Maggs and Jan Pucalka, won the doubles title in the USTA Pro Circuit competition.

Since Wallin, Maggs, and Pucalka are still enrolled in college, they are not eligible to win prize money from the competition, but they are, nevertheless, still awarded ITF world ranking points. After winning last week’s West Texas Pro Tennis Open, which is likewise categorized as a “M15” event, meaning it is a men’s tournament with a $15,000 total prize pool, Wallin, a junior at Texas Tech, has now won back-to-back professional events. College players are permitted to compete in tournament fields that are predominately made up of professionals because it is the ITF’s lowest level professional event.
