Duke begins college basketball season 2022–23 practice with a talented freshman out

NCAA regulations let Duke and any other team that starts the season on November 7 to start practicing on Monday and start committing 20 hours per week to the sport, even though the first regular-season game is still 42 days away. The Blue Devils made this decision despite uncertainty about a key player’s health. The fractured foot that had surgery in late August is still bothering Dariq Whitehead, a 6-6 forward who might be selected in the NBA draft lottery in June.

When Duke was practicing in the offseason, Whitehead got hurt. He wasn’t using crutches anymore, but last weekend he was still sporting a boot on his right foot. Whitehead was at practice on Monday after being released from the boot, but he didn’t take part in any five-on-five action. Instead, he is utilizing an underwater treadmill and resistance bands to work on his recuperation. In practice drills on Tuesday, he was distributing the ball to teammates and getting some shots off without stepping on his injured foot. According to him, he is working on strengthening his foot and plans to play this autumn.
