Eagles Add a Quarterback; Bears Cut Porter

McGloin? Really?

See, now, it’s shit like this that keeps people talking about Colin Kaepernick. The Philadelphia Eagles have added another quarterback to their roster, signing former Oakland Raiders No. 2 QB Matt McGloin to a one-year deal Monday.

The Eagles have already signed their former starter Nick Foles to a contract earlier in the season. They’ll both vie for the No. 2 spot behind second-year quarterback Carson Wentz.

Depending on how many quarterbacks Doug Pederson intends on keeping, McGloin could just be a camp arm. Certainly the team needs at least three guys to use in the preseason since Wentz will play sparingly in games one and two and only see extended action in game three. McGloin was probably the cheapest, best option for a guy the Eagles could easily cut come September if need be.

Last year McGloin played in four games with Raiders and started one. He completed 53.3 percent of his passes for 50 yards, no touchdowns and no picks and proved once again that NFL backup quarterbacks are harder to get rid of than a cold sore.

In other Eagles news, defensive tackle Beau Allen injured his pectoral muscle while working out. Allen will need surgery to repair the ruptured pec and will miss 4-to-6 months. He’s expected to be ready for the Eagles game in Week One.

Last year Allen started three games for the Eagles and played in all 16. He had 29 tackles, 0.5 sacks and one fumble recovery.

Bears cut Porter

Tracy Porter started 15 games for the Chicago Bears last season and 28 over the last two, but a youth movement and nearly full rebuild has cost him a job. Monday the Bears cut Porter, opening up $3.6 million in salary cap space. Porter signed a three-year, $12 million deal last offseason.

Last season Porter recorded 48 tackles, nine pass defenses, one forced fumble and two interceptions. As long as he’s healthy, he should still be able to find a job.

Arm rasslin’ costs players

Hopefully no one had the custody of a kid at stake as multiple active NFL players competed in the “The Pro Football Arm Wrestling Championship” in Las Vegas last week at the MGM Grand Resort. For some reason, the NFL took issue with their participation and will fine every active player that rassled.

According to the Washington Post, 32 current players competed including James Harrison, Kenny Stills, NaVorro, Bowman and Marquette King. According to NFL Executive Vice President Joe Lockhart, competing int he tournament is a violation of the NFL’s rules.

“Had we been asked in advance if this was acceptable, we would have indicated that it was in direct violation of the gambling policy,” Lockhart said.

That policy, evidently, keeps players from being a part of Casino promotional events and this will likely count as one of those.

Three teams open organized team activities Monday

The Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos all got their 2017 seasons officially started Monday with their first organized team activities.  As allowed by NFL rules, teams with new head coaches are allowed to get a jump on the rest of the league and can start OTAs anytime after April 2.

All the teams are breaking in young quarterbacks, with the 49ers best option probably being Matt Barkley (even though Brian Hoyer will probably start), the Broncos working on Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch and the Rams getting Jerod Goff his first actual lessons in NFL-level offensive play design and playcalling. Goff, needless to say, is pretty pumped.

“I think we’re a lot closer to where we want to be than people may think,” Goff told reporters after the OTA. “We got the players. We got the talent. We got all the pieces we need. It’s just about putting it together now.”

London calling way early

The New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins will face off at London’s Wembley Stadium on Oct. 1 and they’ll do it bright an early USA time. Kick off has been set for 9:30 a.m. EST, which means we’ll probably get four nationally televised football games that day in America.

The NFL is playing four games in London this season, with the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars fighting out at Wembley while the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals along with the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings will pound the ole pitch at the incredibly British-sounding Twickenham Stadium.
