Finland Beat Russia to Make the IIHF World Championship Final and More

Finland pulled off a pretty big upset in Slovakia earlier today to make it to the 2019 IIHF World Championship Final on Sunday. The Suomi managed to hold on for a 1-0 win against the favored Russians, and now they are looking to win their third world championship. Finland doesn’t have a great track record of success in the final though, posting a 2-8 record in the title game.

Kevin Lankinen was superb in net for the Finns on Saturday. He stopped all 32 shots the Russians put on goal in a 1-0 win, and he bounced back tremendously after a shaky performance versus Sweden on Thursday. Finland will face either Canada or the Czech Republic for the gold medal on Sunday.

Phil Kessel will almost certainly be dealt in the next month or so. The big question right now is whether he will waive his partial no trade clause, which is hampering the Penguins’ efforts to trade him. Reportedly, Kessel can veto a trade to 23 different teams, leaving Pittsburgh with only a quarter of the league’s teams to negotiate with provided Kessel agrees to waive his partial no trade clause.

Defenseman Brett Kulak was set to be a restricted free agent on July 1, but the Montreal Canadiens have come to terms with the 25-year-old. Kulak is set to stay in Montreal for another three years.

Back-up goaltender Laurent Brossoit is set to be a Jet for one more season after signing a one-year contract with Winnipeg earlier today. Brossoit played admirably when Connor Hellebuyck needed a rest this season, and his .925 save percentage was one of the best among back-up goaltenders.
