La Liga Fantasy: Recapping Week 4

Barcelona and Real Madrid both registered impressive wins over the weekend with the Barcelona trident producing at an elite level once again while Real Madrid closed the door on an inferior opponent. Both clubs are represented among the top La Liga fantasy performers from this past week in La Liga with a focus on the top two strikers from Barcelona. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.

GK: Kiko Casilla, Real Madrid

Casilla was as good as he needed to be for Real Madrid in their 2-0 win over Espanyol, stopping both shots he faced to preserve the clean sheet victory over the weekend. More importantly for the club, Real Madrid improved to 4-0-0 on the season to keep an early three-point lead on Barcelona for top spot in the La Liga table. Not only is their 12-point total the best in La Liga, their nine-goal differential is also better than any other team.

Honorable Mention: Javi Varas, Las Palmas; Jan Oblak, Atletico Madrid; Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Barcelona

D: Filipe Luis, Real Madrid

Luis got in to the action for Atletico Madrid in their lopsided 5-0 win over Sporting Gijon, scoring a goal and helping to shut down the opposition attack at the other end of the pitch. It was certainly a convincing win for an Atletico side that stumbled out of the gate this season and a reminder of where Sporting Gijon stands following a hot start. Real Madrid has allowed just three goals so far this season, which is among the best in La Liga fantasy. Only four teams have allowed fewer goals.

Honorable Mention: Yuri Berciche, Real Sociedad; Diego Godin, Atletico Madrid

M: Artiz Arduriz, Athletic Bilbao

Arduriz was the highest scoring La Liga fantasy midfielder over the weekend with two goals on four shots in a 2-1 win over Valencia. On a relatively quiet weekend among La Liga midfielders, Arduriz was clearly the top performer at his position. Athletic Bilbao has been solid at the defensive end this season, for the most part. They have allowed just four tallies in four games this season.

M: Pedro Leon, Eibar

Leon was all over the pitch for Eibar in their 1-1 draw with Sevilla, registering their lone goal and recording a pair of shots. There was plenty of scoring from players listed at the forward positions but a relatively quiet weekend for La Liga midfielders allowed Leon to sneak on to this list. Eibar is currently in seventh place in the La Liga table as they’ve registered seven points in four games so far. They are currently in a tie for that spot with Sporting.

Honorable Mention: Rafinha, Barcelona; James Rodriguez, Real Madrid; Koke, Atletico Madrid

F: Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Leganes was clearly the most impressive of the weekend, so it should be no surprise that the club is well represented up front on this list. Messi scored twice on four six total shots and added an assists to complete the top fantasy performance of the weekend in La Liga regardless of position. As a team, Barcelona has now scored 13 goals in four games this season. Although they are currently in second place in the standings table with nine points (three points back of league-leading Real Madrid), their 13 goals actually stands as the best in La Liga.

F: Luis Suarez, Barcelona

Suarez was the perfect compliment to Messi up front once again, matching his three points with a goal and two assists. A lesser goal and shot total resulted in Suarez delivering the second-best fantasy score of the weekend among all La Liga players and considering their firepower it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if the top two Barcelona strikers accomplished this feat again at any point moving forward. Barcelona is currently sitting in second place in the La Liga Standings, just three points short of Real Madrid. Barcelona has three wins and a loss while Real Madrid has managed to win all of their games so far this season.

Honorable Mention: Alexander Alegria Moreno, Real Betis; Nicola Sansone, Villarreal; Antoine Griezmann, Atletico Madrid
