Lucha Underground S1E8 Recap: Road to Aztec Warfare

Photo from El Rey Network

On the last episode of Lucha Underground, King Cuerno defeated a debuting Super Fly, and Chavo Guerrero defeated Fenix. Also, Johnny Mundo was victorious in a triple threat ladder match against Big Ryck and Prince Puma to win a $100,000 prize that was previously offered to him for being the most impressive fighter on the premiere episode of Lucha Underground.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
The show starts off with several wrestlers in the ring. This includes Fenix, Drago, Pentagon Jr., Prince Puma, Son of Havoc, El Mariachi Loco, Super Fly, King Cuerno, Mascarita Sagrada, and Big Ryck. Dario Cueto says that these luchadors will be part of an epic event tonight: a Lucha Underground 10-way match. Cueto also announces that this will only be the first of two 10-way matches tonight.

The winner of each match will be rewarded, but not with money this time. Cueto says that they will be awarded with a “unique opportunity,” and the match is underway.

Drago vs. Big Ryck vs. Mascarita Sagrada vs. King Cuerno vs. Prince Puma vs. Pentagon Jr. vs. El Mariachi Loco vs. Son of Havoc vs. Fenix vs. Super Fly
This is probably the first time I have seen a match that features ten competitors and ends by pinfall or submission. Normally, a match with this many competitors tends to be an over-the-top-rope battle royal. It’s a smart move to have two 10-man matches on a 1-hour long episode, so that as much talent as possible can make an impression.

Prince Puma hits the 630 Splash on Big Ryck, but Fenix takes advantage. After Prince Puma is reeling from the splash, Fenix hits Puma with a modified piledriver for the win. Winner: Fenix

Cisco vs. Cortez Castro vs. Pimpinela Escarlata vs. Sexy Star vs. Johnny Mundo vs. Ricky Mantel vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) vs. Famous B vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. Bael
The last 10-man match was won by pinfall, but this match is a more typical battle royal. In order to win the match, everybody else must be thrown over the top rope.

Perhaps the least familiar face in this match is Bael, who interfered in the triple threat ladder match last night to help Big Ryck.

Over the last few weeks, there has been a mysterious woman scouting matches, and she is back out in the stands to scout this one, or at least stare angrily at it.

The final two are Johnny Mundo and Mil Muertes, two of the most successful wrestlers in Lucha Underground so far. Johnny Mundo goes for the End of the World (formerly known as the Starship Pain in WWE), and Mil Muertes counters, leading to Mil Muertes hitting Johnny Mundo with a lariat to send him over the top rope. Winner: Mil Muertes

After this match, both Mil Muertes and Fenix have earned the “unique opportunity” that Dario Cueto promised earlier in the night. Dario Cueto comes out, and Fenix and Mil Muertes are standing in the ring. The opportunity is for the Lucha Underground Championship. The match will be an Aztec Warfare match, a match of Cuerto’s own invention.

Tonight, the main event will feature Mil Muertes vs. Fenix. The winner will enter last, being the freshest competitor in the match. The loser, however, will have to enter first, outlasting everybody else.

Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) vs. Fenix
Both of these competitors have been impressive over the last several weeks. Mil Muertes is undefeated, and has impressive strength, physically dominating his opponents. Fenix is a very flashy high flyer, with a very unique arsenal of high velocity moves.

Mil Muertes counters a springboard attempt by Fenix with a huge uppercut, then hits the Flatliner to win, and end this episode of Lucha Underground. Winner: Mil Muertes
