Lucha Underground S2E8 Recap: New Champions

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, we saw the first appearance of Mariposa (Marty “The Moth” Martinez’s sister), the in-ring debut of Taya, and Mil Muertes defending his Lucha Underground Championship against Pentagon Jr. and Prince Puma.

After successfully defending the Lucha Underground Championship, Mil Muertes has to defend his title for the second week in a row, since Fenix is cashing in the Gift of the Gods Championship. Since Fenix cashed in the championship, he is guaranteed a Lucha Underground Championship match tonight, and the fight for the Aztec medallions that make up the Gift of the Gods Championship starts all over again.

Along with Mil Muertes, the Disciples of Death also have to defend their Trios Championship titles. Ivelisse talked to Catrina last week, and if her team (Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, and Angélico) does not win the Trios Championship titles, they will be kicked out of the Temple.

Opening Segment
Catrina approaches Fenix, jealous of his ability to come back again and again and again. She wonders if she made the wrong choice by choosing Mil Muertes, and kisses Fenix. According to Catrina, either Mil Muertes will destroy Fenix once and for all, or Fenix will bring Catrina back from the dead.

Ivelisse, Angélico, & Son of Havoc vs. Disciples of Death (c) (w/Catrina) – Trios Championship
Along with the possibility of become Trios Champions for the second time, Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, and Angélico have extra motivation to win this match. If they lose, they will be gone from the Temple forever. These two teams last faced each other, the Disciples of Death were very dominant in winning the Trios Championship, which was assisted by Catrina and her mysterious Aztec stone.

Now that Ivelisse is fully healed, her team is stronger than ever. With the odds evened up for this rematch, Son of Havoc was able to hit the Shooting Star Press to regain the Trios Championship titles. Winners, and NEW Lucha Underground Trios Champions: Ivelisse, Angélico, & Son of Havoc

Backstage Segment
Johnny Mundo approaches Prince Puma during their training session, and tells Puma that at Aztec Warfare next week, Mundo will not go easy on Puma, and will go on to win the Lucha Underground Championship.

We switch gears to Rey Mysterio and Dragon Azteca Jr., and we find out that Dragon Azteca’s training is complete. Mysterio hands Azteca a letter identical to the one in his own hands, which states that they have been invited to compete in the Temple.

Chavo Guerrero vs. Texano – Bull Rope Match
Chavo Guerrero came to the ring with the Crew in his corner, but they realize what has happened when they try to help Guerrero (getting beat up, that is), and decide to head to the back. Texano possibly has the advantage in this match, having already competed in a Bull Rope match in Temple last season against Alberto El Patron. He did lose that match, however, so it is not certain how much of an advantage Texano really has here.

For those who don’t know, a Bull Rope match is a typical No Disqualification match, but both competitors are connected to each other by about a 15-foot long bull rope.

Texano uses the bull rope to his advantage, and hits a sit-out powerbomb on Chavo Guerrero to pick up the victory. Winner: Texano

Backstage Segment
Mil Muertes is in the locker room destroying the Disciples of death, presumably for their loss earlier tonight. Catrina tells Muertes to spare them, and they make their way to the ring for the main event.

We switch gears to Dario Cueto and Black Lotus, who have been away from the Temple all season. Cueto says that his brother, Matanza Cueto, is ready, and it is time for them to take back the Temple.

Mil Muertes (c) (w/Catrina) vs. Fenix – Lucha Underground Championship
Fenix and Mil Muertes have a saga that has lasted for almost a year. It has included Aztec Warfare, Grave Consequences, and even a death match. Most of their battle, however, were before Mil Muertes returned in his newer, darker, more dominant form. Fenix has shown over and over again that he will not quit, but Muertes just might be too strong this time.

During the match, both Fenix and Muertes rip each other’s mask, which is a sign of complete disrespect in lucha libre.

After complete destruction, Mil Muertes attempts the Flatliner, but Fenix counters into a pinning combination to dethrone Mil Muertes. Winner, and NEW Lucha Underground Champion: Fenix

After the match, Catrina announces that at Aztec Warfare next week, Fenix will enter at #1, Mil Muertes at #20, and it will be for the Lucha Underground Championship.
