Lucha Underground S2E9 Recap: Aztec Warfare II

Photo from El Rey Network

On last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, both major championships changed hands. To start the night, Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico defeated the Disciples of Death to become two-time Trios Champions, and to keep their place in the Temple. What ended the night was a shocking victory, where Fenix defeated Mil Muertes to become the new Lucha Underground Champion. Because of that, the stakes for tonight have been raised.

Tonight features the second-ever Aztec Warfare, which is one match that will last all night. 20 luchadores will compete for the Lucha Underground Championship, and when you enter the match plays a key role in your chances. Two luchadores will start off (#1 is Fenix) and every 90 seconds or so another luchador will enter the match until #20 (Mil Muertes) enters. There are no disqualifications, and you can only be eliminated by pinfall or submission. Fenix has the biggest disadvantage in the match entering first, and it is almost guaranteed that there will be a new Lucha Underground Champion.

Aztec Warfare II – Lucha Underground Championship
Entrant #1 is Fenix, which is his entry number in Aztec Warfare for the second time in a row, but this time, he is defending the Lucha Underground Champion. As he comes down to the ring, we see Famous B outside of the ring seemingly scouting talent for new clients. Immediately after Fenix is perhaps the biggest name in lucha libre history, Rey Mysterio. Aztec Warfare is Mysterio’s debut in the Temple, and he is a great legend to have in Lucha Underground.

Entrant #3 is the first-ever Gift of the Gods Champion, King Cuerno. His entrance in this match will slow down the match to a more methodical pace. Followed by Cuerno is Argenis, who has been absent from the Temple in quite some time, and could make quite the impact in this match.

Shortly after Argenis enters the match, Rey Mysterio hits him with the 619, followed by a frog splash for the elimination. Eliminated: Argenis

After the elimination, Johnny Mundo makes his way to the ring as entrant #5. Mundo and Mysterio have both been in WWE, and now meet again in the Temple.

Entrant #6 is the sleazy Joey Ryan, who makes his second Temple appearance, and who is an undercover cop. Ryan’s strategy is to immediately handcuff himself to the stands, preventing anyone from pinning him. Following Ryan as entrant #7 is the winner of the first Aztec Warfare, Prince Puma.

Jack Evans enters as #8, and while he comes down the stairs, Rey Mysterio locks in an armbar on King Cuerno for the elimination. Eliminated: King Cuerno

Entrant #9 is Taya, who helps Jack Evans and Johnny Mundo form a temporary alliance in this match. Just when Mundo thinks he has everything under control, Cage comes to the ring as entrant #10. After “the Machine” enters, entrant #11 is the only person in the match smaller than Rey Mysterio, Mascarita Sagrada.

Cage hits Weapon X outside the ring on Mundo, and Prince Puma hits a standing Shooting Star Press in the ring for the elimination. Eliminated: Johnny Mundo

Entrant #12 is Marty “The Moth” Martinez, who has become more psychotic since he kidnapped Sexy Star at the end of Season One. Immediately following Martinez is Drago as entrant #13.

Mascarita Sagrada and Rey Mysterio work together to put away “The Moth.” Eliminated: Marty “The Moth” Martinez

The Mack enters Aztec Warfare at #14, and the Mack has all of the tools to become Lucha Underground Champion. Following the Mack is perhaps the most underhanded luchador in the Temple, Chavo Guerrero. After entering, Guerrero immediately eliminates Sagrada with the Camel Clutch. Then Johnny Mundo hits Cage over the skull with a cinder block to eliminate the Machine, and in quick succession, Taya is eliminated too. Eliminated: Mascarita Sagrada, Cage, & Taya

Amidst all of the rapid eliminations, PJ Black enters at #16, followed by the returning Aerostar at #17. There are only two other luchadores to enter before Mil Muertes.

PJ Black and Aerostar eliminate Jack Evans and Drago at the same time by pinfall. Eliminated: Jack Evans & Drago

Another debuting luchador enters at #18, with the appearance of Dragon Azteca Jr.. Entrant #19 is Texano, which means with Mil Muertes at #20, all participants are now known. Texano hits a sit-out powerbomb on PJ Black for the elimination. Eliminated: PJ Black

During Muertes’s entrance, he is attacked from behind by Pentagon Jr. with a chair, who lays out the former Lucha Underground Champion. After a splash from Mysterio and help from Prince Puma, Muertes is eliminated quickly. Eliminated: Mil Muertes

After Muertes’s elimination, Catrina orders Vampiro to leave the Temple, but is interrupted by the return of Dario Cueto, who is here to take back his Temple. He announces one more entrant for Aztec Warfare: Dario Cueto’s brother, “The Monster,” Matanza Cueto.

Matanza Cueto makes a huge impact, immediately eliminating practically everyone in sight. Eliminated: Fenix, The Mack, Aerostar, Texano, Joey Ryan, Dragon Azteca Jr., & Chavo Guerrero

Along with Matanza Cueto, Prince Puma and Rey Musterio are the only two left, and work together to try an take down Matanza Cueto. After a German suplex, Matanza eliminates the first-ever Lucha Underground Champion. Eliminated: Prince Puma

After taking a 619 hit by Mysterio, Matanza hits a reverse powerslam on the former WWE Champion to become the new Lucha Underground Champion. Winner, and NEW Lucha Underground Champion: Matanza Cueto
