Lucha Underground S2E10 Recap: El Jefe is Back

Photo from El Rey Network

Last week’s episode of Lucha Underground featured the second iteration of Aztec Warfare. Fenix would have to defend his Lucha Underground Championship against twenty other men in a match where you could only be eliminated by pinfall or submission. During this match, we saw three huge debuts: Rey Mysterio, Dragon Azteca Jr., and the winner of Aztec Warfare, “The Monster,” Matanza Cueto. Matanza would enter at #21, thanks to the return of Dario Cueto, who took back the Temple from Catrina’s control. During the match, Matanza eliminated half of the participants, including Fenix, Prince Puma, and Rey Mysterio just to name a few, and he would walk out the Lucha Underground Champion.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is in the ring to announce his plans for the Temple. To start off, next week will be the beginning of another Trios Championship tournament. Cueto wants a new #1 Contender for the Lucha Underground Championship, and he is interrupted by Pentagon Jr.. Pentagon gets ready to break Dario Cueto’s arm, an Pentagon Jr. is given a championship match against Matanza Cueto.

Taya & Johnny Mundo vs. Mr. Cisco & Cortez Castro
Taya is the newest luchador in this match, debuting several weeks ago when she helped Johnny Mundo defeat Cage. Since then, she has competed against Cage in a No Disqualification match, and she was also a part of Aztec Warfare last week. She has Johnny Mundo in her corner, who is one of the best luchadores in the Temple, but her opponents have a history of being a dominant team.

During the match, Cage comes down to ringside where Johnny Mundo is fighting Mr. Cisco. Taya gets absolutely no help from Johnny Mundo, and Cisco and Castro hit a flapjack/codebreaker combination to pick up the victory. Winners: Mr. Cisco & Cortez Castro

Backstage Segment
Catrina appears in Dario Cueto’s office regarding the Lucha Underground Championship. Dario Cueto tries to work with Catrina, but all Catrina focuses on is the fact the Mil Muertes is on the hunt for Matanza Cueto.

Ivelisse, Angélico, & Son of Havoc (c) vs. Disciples of Death (w/Catrina) – Trios Championship (Elimination Match)
This is the third Trios Championship match between these two teams, but there is a bit of a twist. Instead of one fall ending the match, one team has to score a fall over every member of the opposing team.

Catrina provides enough of a distraction for the Disciples of Death to take advantage and eliminate Ivelisse. Eliminated: Ivelisse

Angélico hits the Fall of the Angel for the first disciple elimination. Eliminated: Trece

Angélico gets his face planted in the mat to leave Son of Havoc all by himself. Eliminated: Angélico

After hitting a Shooting Star Press on Barrio Negro to make this a one-on-one match. Eliminated: Barrio Negro

Son of Havoc hits two suicide dives and a Shooting Star Press on Sinestro de la Muerte to retain the Trios Championship. Winners, and STILL Trios Champions: Ivelisse, Angélico, & Son of Havoc

Sexy Star (w/The Mack) vs. Mariposa (w/Marty “The Moth” Martinez)
At the end of Season One, Mariposa and “The Moth” kidnapped Sexy Star. She managed to escape, but there is no knowledge of what happened while she was being kidnapped. Mariposa first showed up a couple weeks ago, and Sexy Star almost had a panic attack when she saw her captor.

Mariposa hits the Butterfly Effect on Sexy Star to pick up her debut victory in impressive fashion. Winner: Mariposa

After the match, Marty “The Moth” Martinez attacks The Mack from behind, and Martinez stands tall in the ring with his sister.

Matanza Cueto (c) vs. Pentagon Jr. – Lucha Underground Championship
Pentagon Jr. dominated Lucha Underground by breaking arms and decimating his competition. However, Matanza Cueto is no normal luchador. He is the largest luchador on the roster, and perhaps the strongest (including Cage). Before the match, Dario Cueto ordered his brother to break the back of Pentagon Jr..

Pentagon Jr. barely gets any offense in, and Matanza hits the Wrath of the Gods (reverse swinging powerslam) to retain his title. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: “The Monster” Matanza Cueto

After the match, Vampiro tries to get Pentagon Jr. some help, but Matanza kicks Vampiro out of the way. Matanza powerbombs Pentagon Jr. through the commentary table, and Pentagon Jr. gets taken out on a stretcher to end the show.
