Lucha Underground S1E23 Recap: Unique Opportunity

Photo from El Rey Network

The last episode of Lucha Underground was a big one. The show kicked off with a match in the Trios tournament, with the unlikely team of Angélico, Son of Havoc, and Ivelisse defeating an equally as unlikely team of Aerostar, Drago, and Fenix. Then, we saw Lucha Underground’s first-ever Mask vs. Mask match, as Super Fly had to take off his mask after losing to Sexy Star. Right after the unmasking, Pentagon Jr. would add injury to insult by breaking Super Fly’s arm. The night concluded with Prince Puma (accompanied by his Trios tournament team of Hernandez and Johnny Mundo) successfully defending his Lucha Underground Championship against King Cuerno (accompanied by his Trios tournament team of Cage and Texano).

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground will feature a Trios tournament match between Prince Puma’s team and King Cuerno’s team, as well as the final match in the “Best of 5” series between Drago and Aerostar.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is on top of the Temple with Aerostar, who is getting his inspiration from the cosmos. Cueto warns Aerostar that Drago will stop at nothing to win the final match in their “Best of 5” series, and Cueto wishes him luck.

King Cuerno, Texano, & Cage vs. Prince Puma, Hernandez, & Johnny Mundo – Trios Tournament Match
Dario Cueto has personally assembled the team of Cuerno, Texano, and Cage, and it might be the most intimidating team in the entire tournament. Cuerno has a history of being a hunter, picking apart his prey, including one of his opponents, Johnny Mundo. Texano is a former AAA Mega Champion, and Cage is an unstoppable “machine” with impressive strength.

It is also important to note that this is Hernandez’s first match in Lucha Underground. This might be a disadvantage for him, but it helps that he is paired up with some of the most successful veterans in the Temple. It doesn’t help that he is constantly taunting and playing to the crowd during the match.

Texano takes advantage of being outside the ring to hit Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma with his bull rope. This leads to King Cuerno hitting the Thrill of the Hunt on Prince Puma for the win. Winners: Texano, Cage, & King Cuerno

After the match, Dario Cueto exits his office to set up a preview for the Trios Championship match next week. One member of each qualified team will compete in a triple threat match, possibly hinting at the result of next week’s title bout.

Cage vs. The Mack vs. Son of Havoc
This match is a great opportunity to give the fans a unique match, while shedding some more light on the newly signed Mack. The Mack is incredibly agile for his size, which is comparable to the size of Cage.

After a great match displaying plenty of talents from all three competitors, Cage hits a modified Gory Special on Son of Havoc to pick up the victory. Winner: Cage

Backstage Segment
Dario Cueto tries to get inside Drago’s head to get him ready for his match tonight against Aerostar.

In-ring Segment
Pentagon Jr. is in the ring, and is about to send another sacrifice to his master. He starts going after the ring announcer, and Vampiro is about to make the save, but Sexy Star makes the save.

Aerostar (2) vs. Drago (2) – Best of 5 Series Finale (No Disqualifications, No Count-Outs)
Over the last several weeks, Aerostar and Drago have put on amazing matches in this series. After each match, they would show a sign of respect, but as the series goes on, the animosity and tension between these two keeps growing. Whoever win this match will be awarded one of Dario Cueto’s “unique opportunities.” Because of this, Cueto is sitting at ringside, eagerly watching the match.

Throughout the night, there has been a man sitting at ringside who has seemed to be “scouting” the luchadores who have competed tonight.

After hitting Aerostar with a very innovative, Drago rolls Aerostar up with the Dragon’s Lair, winning the match, and the “unique opportunity”. Winner: Drago

After the match, and after all the dust has settled, Drago and Aerostar are back to showing each other the respect the deserve as luchadores.

Dario Cueto comes to the ring to award Drago his “unique opportunity.” This opportunity is a shot at Prince Puma’s Lucha Underground Championship. If Drago loses, however, he is banned from the Temple forever.
