Lucha Underground S1E31 Recap: Drago Returns to the Temple

Photo from El Rey Network

On the last episode of Lucha Underground, we saw three huge matches. The night started with recent Lucha Underground signee Jack Evans defeating Argenis to win the second of seven Aztec medallions, which according to Dario Cueto, will bring him good fortune. Afterwards, the Trios Champions (Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico) would overcome the odds yet again to retain their titles. The night would main event with Pentagon Jr. defeating Sexy Star in a submission match, with the help of an unmasked Super Fly. After the match, Pentagon Jr. would go to break the arm of Sexy Star, but Vampiro had enough, and left the commentary table to make the save.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Drago is on top of the Temple, after being banned permanently by Dario Cueto, spreads his wings, and jumps off.

Before any matches start, Vampiro apologizes for his actions last week (saving Sexy Star), and says that he should stay a broadcaster.

In-ring Segment
Dario Cueto is in the ring to announce a huge event: Ultima Lucha. Tonight, we will find out who will compete for the Lucha Underground Championship at Ultima Lucha. There will be a triple threat match between Hernandez, King Cuerno, and Cage, the previous challengers to the Lucha Underground Championship, to determine who will face Prince Puma at Ultima Lucha.

After the huge announcement, Dario Cueto welcomes back the man who was part of the first-ever Lucha Underground match, the legendary Blue Demon Jr.. To make sure Blue Demon Jr. does not have any “ring rust,” Cueto puts him in a match, against someone that Blue Demon Jr. has plenty of history with.

Blue Demon Jr. vs. Chavo Guerrero (w/The Crew) (Anything Goes)
This match is impromptu, so Blue Demon Jr. has to wrestle in a suit. The fact that anything goes in this match plays in Chavo Guerrero’s favor, especially with The Crew at ringside.

Before Chavo Guerrero originally quit Lucha Underground, he turned on Blue Demon Jr., hitting him repeatedly with a steel chair, sending him out of action for weeks. Now that both luchadores are back, the story continues.

After Chavo Guerrero gets plenty of help from The Crew, he hits a frog splash on Blue Demon Jr. to pick up the victory. Winner: Chavo Guerrero

Backstage Segment
Drago confronts Dario Cueto regarding the main event. Since Drago has faced Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship, he is eligible to participate in the match. Cueto allows Drago in the main event, on one condition: if Drago doesn’t win, he will still be banished, and will have to leave his mask behind.

Disciples of Death (w/Catrina) vs. Mascarita Sagrada, Pimpinela Escarlata, & Bengala
When Mil Muertes returned, he was accompanied by the Disciples of Death, who are seemingly under the control of Catrina and the mysterious stone. This match is the return of Pimpinela Escarlata and Mascarita Sagrada, after being taken out of action by the Crew several weeks ago. Along with their return, this is the debut of Bengala (as well as the Disciples of Death), so there are a lot of fresh faces involved in this match.

After Catrina gives Escarlata the Lick of Death, the Disciples of Death hit a very unique triple team on Escarlata to win their debut match. Winners: Disciples of Death

Backstage Segment
Johnny Mundo is in Dario Cueto’s office, questioning why he is not involved in the main event. Cueto didn’t put Mundo in the #1 Contender’s match because he wants Mundo to already be Lucha Underground Champion by Ultima Lucha. To set up the championship opportunity, Cueto sets up a match for next week: Johnny Mundo will challenge Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship, in an Iron Man match that will last the entire show.

Cage vs. Hernandez vs. King Cuerno vs. Drago – #1 Contender’s Match (Lucha Underground Championship
All four of these competitors have failed to defeat Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship, and a win in this match will give them another opportunity to win the gold.

During the match, Killshot is seen on a perch scouting this match. King Cuerno mimes shooting Killshot with an arrow, possibly setting up a future feud.

Drago spits green mist into the face of King Cuerno, then rolls him up to win the match, earn the Ultima Lucha opportunity, and return to the Temple. Winner, and NEW #1 Contender: Drago

After the match, Prince Puma comes down to the ring, and the champion and challenger have a stare-down.

Backstage Segment
Catrina appears in Dario Cueto’s office, and chokes him enough to convice Cueto to give Mil Muertes an opportunity at becoming the Lucha Underground Champion. In two weeks, Mil Muertes will face Drago, and the winner of that match will face the Lucha Underground Champion at Ultima Lucha.
