Lucha Underground S1E32 Recap: One Match, All Night Long

Photo from El Rey Network

The previous episode of Lucha Underground was perhaps one of the biggest in history. We saw the debut of four new luchadores, and the return of five luchadores. Dario Cueto announced Ultima Lucha, the biggest event in Lucha Underground history, and the winner of the #1 Contender match last week would take on the Lucha Underground Champion.

In Lucha Underground debuts, there was a Trios match featuring the Disciples of Death, as well as Bengala. The Disciples of Death are under the control of Catrina, and accompanied Mil Muertes in his Lucha Underground return a few weeks ago. Bengala is a high-flying luchador based on a bengal tiger, who teamed up with two returning luchadores: Pimpinela Escarlata and Mascarita Sagrada.

Along with Pimpinela Escarlata and Mascarita Sagrada were the returns of Chavo Guerrero and Blue Demon Jr.. These two have been feuding since day one of Lucha Underground, and Chavo had the unfair advantage to defeat Blue Demon Jr. in an “Anything Goes” match, thanks to the help of The Crew.

The most important return of the night, however, was Drago, who was previously banned from the Temple. Since Drago won the fatal four-way match, he is no longer banned from the temple, and if he defeats Mil Muertes next week, he will face the Lucha Underground Champion at Ultima Lucha.

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground features one match: Johnny Mundo vs. Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship. This is in the form of an Iron Man match, which will take the entire show.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Johnny Mundo vs. Prince Puma (c) – Lucha Underground Championship (Iron Man Match)
During a #1 Contender’s Match between Hernandez and Alberto El Patron several weeks ago, Johnny Mundo attacked Alberto El Patron from behind, and ended up sending him through the window of Dario Cueto’s office. Because of this new found aggression that Johnny Mundo shows, Dario Cueto wanted to give him this opportunity. Cueto is tired of Prince Puma being the Lucha Underground Champion, so tonight’s match is Johnny Mundo’s opportunity to dethrone Prince Puma.

Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma are the two “top guys” in Lucha Underground, and they have plenty of history between each other. On the very first episode of Lucha Underground, Mundo and Puma faced each other in the main event to earn Dario Cueto’s first “unique opportunity.” Johnny Mundo would end up winning that match, but a lot of things have change in the last 32 weeks, so it is not guaranteed that Mundo will pick up another victory.

Prince Puma has overcome all challengers as Lucha Underground Champion, and has only successfully defended the title. He has taken on Drago, King Cuerno, Fenix, Cage, and Hernandez, and has defeated them all. In this match type that is new to the Temple, Prince Puma might have his toughest challenge yet.

This match will last the entire episode, and the only way to win is to have more falls than your opponent when the timer ends. Unlike WWE’s Iron Man matches, this is Lucha Underground, so there is no disqualification.

Prince Puma gets a quick roll-up on Johnny Mundo to pick up the first fall. Standings: Prince Puma – 1, Johnny Mundo – 0

Mundo uses the ropes to gain leverage on Prince Puma to tie things up. Standings: Puma – 1, Mundo – 1

Mundo and Puma go to ringside, and Mundo hits Puma across the skull with a crowbar, then rolls him into the ring for the next fall. He immediately hits the Moonlight Drive to pick up two in a row. Standings: Puma – 1, Mundo – 3

Prince Puma gets back up, only to be hit by the End of the World, giving Mundo yet another fall. Standings: Puma – 1, Mundo – 4

Puma spears Mundo from a perch, sending both of them crashing through four tables. Puma then manages to drag Mundo to the ring for his next fall. Standings: Puma – 2, Mundo – 4

Puma hits a modified Michinoku Driver after several kicks to the head to makes things even closer. Standings: Puma – 3, Mundo – 4

Mundo starts to walk away with his lead, but Alberto El Patron stops Mundo’s escape. After a DDT to the outside, El Patron sends Mundo into the ring, which leads to Puma hitting a springboard 450 splash, for his next, and most important fall. Standings: Puma – 4, Mundo – 4

With just eight seconds remaining, Prince Puma hits the 630 Splash to get the 5-4 edge, and to yet again, retain the Lucha Underground Championship. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Prince Puma
