Lucha Underground S1E36 Recap: One Medallion Remaining

Photo from El Rey Network

We are on the road to Ultima Lucha, and things are starting to shape up nicely. There are already three matches announced for the Lucha Underground special. Johnny Mundo will take on Alberto El Patron, where El Patron hopes to get revenge after Mundo threw him through Dario Cueto’s office window. Hernandez will take on Drago, after Hernandez ended on of their matches by choking out Drago with a belt. The main event of Ultima Lucha is the Lucha Underground Champion, Prince Puma, defending his title against “The Man of 1,000 Deaths,” Mil Muertes.

Last week, we saw two challenges made for Ultima Lucha. Blue Demon Jr. does not like the fact that Texano says that he “is” Mexico, and Blue Demon Jr. wants to settle things in the ring. Another challenge made was by Pentagon Jr., who challenged commentator (and former wrestler) Vampiro to a match, after Vampiro prevented Pentagon Jr. from sacrificing Sexy Star to his master.

Tonight, Vampiro will answer Pentagon Jr.’s challenge for a match at Ultima Lucha. If he does not accept the challenge, Pentagon Jr. threatens that Vampiro will “burn in flames.”

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is in his office with Pentagon Jr., and announces that he will give away three more of the seven Aztec medallions. Cueto says that Pentagon Jr. has been so impressive, that he might just be given one without competing. Pentagon Jr. doesn’t want a medal, but instead he just wants to destroy Vampiro.

Bengala vs. Devalar Daivari (w/Big Ryck) – Aztec Medallion Match
This match is the first of three Aztec Medallion matches tonight, where the winners will receive an Aztec Medallion. According to Dario Cueto, these medallions will bring their owners good fortune. The current owners of the first three medallions are Fenix, Aerostar, and Jack Evans.

This is Bengala’s first singles match in Lucha Underground, after debuting a few weeks ago in a trios match against the Disciples of Death.

Daivari tries to get Big Ryck to hit Bengala, but Bengala moves out of the way, and Big Ryck hits Daivari instead. A stunned Daivari get hit with a German suplex from Bengala, and Bengala earns the fourth Aztec medallion. Winner: Bengala

In-ring Segment
Vampiro goes to the ring to address the challenge issued by Pentagon Jr., and says that his time has come, and his career in the wrestling business is currently at the commentary booth. Before he answers the challenge, Pentagon Jr. interrupts, and joins Vampiro in the ring. After Pentagon Jr. taunts Vampiro for some time, Vampiro accepts his challenge, and chokeslams Pentagon Jr., perhaps sumbolizing what will come at Ultima Lucha.

King Cuerno vs. Killshot – Aztec Medallion Match
For the first few months of Lucha Underground, King Cuerno had been choosing prey, and stalking them week after week. In this situation, however, Killshot seems to be the one stalking, and scouting, King Cuerno.

This is the second match of the night that will reward the winner with an Aztec Medallion. The “fortune” that Dario Cueto promises is still unknown, but it is sure to boost the career of the owner.

King Cuerno locks in a surfboard stretch, combined with a choke, to put Killshot away. This also gets King Cuerno the fifth of seven Aztec medallions. Winner: King Cuerno

Super Fly vs. Sexy Star – Aztec Medallion Match
This is the final match of the night for the mysterious Aztec Medallion, and along with that reward hanging in the balance, these two have quite a bit of history with each other. Sexy Star and Super Fly have teamed together, faced each other in a Mask vs. Mask match, and when Super Fly returned unmasked, he unjustly attacked Sexy Star.

After Super Fly disrespects Sexy Star, Sexy Star locks in an armbar, which very quickly puts Super Fly away, and win the sixth Aztec medallion. Winner (via submission): Sexy Star

After the match, Marty “The Moth” Martinez comes to the ring and challenges Sexy Star for a chance to win the medallion. His interest in the medallion is because the medallion has a moth on it, and “The Moth” claims to have ancient Aztec ancestors.

Marty “The Moth” Martinez vs. Sexy Star – Aztec Medallion Match
After reversing the Figure Four Leg Lock, Sexy Star uses the same armbar that put Super Fly away to win this match, and retain her medallion. Winner (via submission): Sexy Star

Face-to-Face (feat. Prince Puma & Mil Muertes)
This first-ever “Face-to-Face” is moderated by none other than Lucha Underground owner and promoter Dario Cueto. Before things get started, Catrina and the Disciples of Death come down to the ring, causing Prince Puma to start defending himself. Konnan tries to even the odds with his cane as a weapon, but he inevitable fails. Mil Muertes forces Prince Puma to watch the Disciples of Death put Konnan in a coffin, then Muertes hits Prince Puma with the Flatliner. If Muertes and his allies do this well at Ultima Lucha, we will see a new Lucha Underground Champion.
