Lucha Underground S1E39 Recap: Ultima Lucha Part II

Photo from El Rey Network

Last week was Part I of the huge two-part Lucha Underground event, Ultima Lucha. The first part saw Cage defeat The Mack in a Falls Count Anywhere match, Drago defeating Hernandez in a Believer’s Backlash match, and The Disciples of Death becoming the new Trios Champions.

Tonight is a two hour-long conclusion to Ultima Lucha that includes some major matches. Texano vs. Blue Demon Jr., The Gift of the Gods Championship match, Vampiro vs. Pentagon Jr., Alberto El Patron vs. Johnny Mundo, and to end the show, Mil Muertes vs. Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Johnny Mundo vs. Alberto El Patron
Before the match starts, we are introduced to the commentator that will be replacing Vampiro for tonight’s major event: Michael Schiavello, who sounds a lot like Vince McMahon when he was a regular commentator.

This match goes back to a #1 Contender’s match between Alberto El Patron and Hernandez. Johnny Mundo interrupted, and cost El Patron the match by sending him through the window to Dario Cueto’s office. El Patron, the AAA Mega Champion, has returned with a vengeance, and has a chance at revenge tonight.

What’s interesting about this match is that both of these men made their names (to American audiences) in WWE, and their star power is very beneficial to Lucha Underground.

El Patron accidentally superkicks the referee, so his armbreaker attempt that caused Mundo to tap out, was never seen by the referee. El Patron has the armbar over the top rope locked in, when former WWE Superstar Melina hits El Patron with the AAA Mega Championship. This sets up Mundo to hit the End of the World on El Patron for the win. Winner: Johnny Mundo

After the match, El Patron interrupts the post-match celebration to attack Johnny Mundo. In an act of revenge, El Patron sends Mundo through a window, busting Mundo wide open. This would be El Patron’s last appearance in Lucha Underground before returning to WWE.

Backstage Segment
El Dragon Azteca breaks into the Temple to rescue Black Lotus. Since the penalty for El Dragon Azteca entering the temple was death, Cueto uses Black Lotus to kill him. Afterwards, Dario Cueto takes Black Lotus out from her cell, and they leave along with Matanza Cueto.

Vampiro vs. Pentagon Jr. – Cero Miedo Match
Several weeks ago, Pentagon Jr. was about to break the arm of Sexy Star, when Vampiro interfered to save Sexy Star’s career. Ever since that moment, Pentagon Jr. has been calling Vampiro out, insulting him, and is hoping to make Vampiro the next sacrifice to his master. Because of how far Pentagon Jr. has gone with antagonizing Vampiro, Vampiro has decided to come out of retirement for one night only, and settle the score in the ring.

The Cero Miedo match is essentially just a match with no rules, according to Matt Striker.

After insanity insues, Pentagon slams Vampiro through a flaming table and pins him for the win. Winner: Pentagon Jr.

After the match, Vampiro calls Pentagon Jr. over to break his arm, and Pentagon Jr. calls for his master to show himself. In a shocking turn of events, Vampiro is the master, and tells Pentagon Jr. that he “is ready.”

Fenix vs. Big Ryck vs. Aerostar vs. King Cuerno vs. Bengala vs. Jack Evans vs. Sexy Star – Gift of the Gods Championship
Over the last few months, each competitor involved in this match was awarded an Aztec medallion, giving them the chance to win the Gift of the Gods Championship. Whoever wins the Gift of the Gods Championship will be able to cash it in with one week’s notice for a guaranteed Lucha Underground Championship opportunity.

During the match, there are two instances of interference. Marty “The Moth” Martinez tries to attack Sexy Star, but she locks in the armbar that has put away Martinez over the past couple of weeks. Big Ryck looked to pick up the victory, but Delavar Daivari, the man who paid Big Ryck to be his bodyguard, interferes and hits Big Ryck with a steel chair.

After hitting Jack Evans with the sit-out tombstone piledriver, Fenix picks up the victory to become the first-ever Gift of the Gods Championship. Winner, NEW Gift of the Gods Champion: Fenix

Texano vs. Blue Demon Jr. (w/Mr. Cisco & Cortez Castro) – No Disqualification
Texano originally challenged Chavo Guerrero for this match, but Blue Demon Jr. had a problem with Texano saying that he “is” Mexico. Blue Demon Jr. has only had a handful of matches in Lucha Underground, including the first match ever for the show against Chavo Guerrero. Blue Demon Jr. is a legendary figure in lucha libre, but Texano is the longest reigning AAA Mega Champion of all-time (which might not matter, considering the numbers game).

During the match, Chavo Guerrero runs down to the ring with a steel chair. He forms an unexpected alliance with Blue Demon Jr., and they take out Texano. Winner: Blue Demon Jr.

Prince Puma (c) vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) – Lucha Underground Championship
Prince Puma has been the only Lucha Underground Champion since the debut of Lucha Underground, and he has overcome all challenges. He has defeated Hernandez, Drago, Johnny Mundo, Fenix, King Cuerno, and Cage, but he has not faced Mil Muertes. Muertes returned stronger than ever, dominating his opponents, like Fenix and Drago. Drago was the original #1 Contender for this match, but with some convincing from Catrina, Dario Cueto gave Muertes an opportunity to face Drago, and Muertes succeeded at becoming the new #1 Contender.

With the Disciples of Death winning the Trios Championship last week, a win in this match for Muertes would essentially give Catrina total control of the championships in the Temple.

After Prince Puma somehow kicks out of the Flatliner, Mil Muertes hits the Flatliner from the top rope to be the only person to defeat Prince Puma in a title match. As usual, Catrina gives Prince Puma the Lick of Death after the match. Winner, and NEW Lucha Underground Champion: Mil Muertes

Before the show ends, The Cuetos and Black Lotus are seen fleeing the Temple. We also see that Marty “The Moth” Martinez has Sexy Star tied up, and warns her that his sister is coming after her. With that, along with other luchadores leaving the temple, giving us a vague setup for Season 2.
