Lucha Underground Recap: Mysterio vs. Pentagon Dark

Photo from El Rey Network

After several months of waiting, we are back at The Temple with the Season 3 premiere of Lucha Underground. To end Ultima Lucha Dos, and Season 2, we saw new Trios Champions, Sexy Star winning the Gift of the God Championship, and Dario Cueto getting arrested. Tonight should give us a look at what Dario Cueto is up to now, and what the landscape of the Temple is after an amazing second season.

Opening Segment
The show kicks off showing Dario Cueto in prison. The guard lets him out, but whoever Cueto knew to get out is unknown. Cueto gets in a limousine with two men who seem to be his bosses. His charges (assumedly for the murder of Mr. Cisco) are dropped, and if he disappoints his bosses again, his “next sentence will be death.”

Before the action in the Temple gets underway, Vampiro announces that he is no longer anyone’s master, and he is instead just a commentator.

In-ring Segment
As usual, Dario Cueto (in the ring with his brother Matanza) has a huge main event scheduled for tonight: Rey Mysterio vs. Pentagon Dark.

After announcing the main event, Cueto unveils a new concept: Dario’s Dial of Doom. There are several names of luchadores on the wheel, and whoever the dial lands on after a spin gets a match against the Lucha Underground Champion, Matanza Cueto. The names must be “credible opponents,” and must have never faced Matanza one-on-one previously.

After spinning Dario’s Dial of Doom, the dial lands on the man from “the open road,” Son of Havoc.

Matanza Cueto (c) vs. Son of Havoc – Lucha Underground Championship
At Ultima Lucha Dos, Son of Havoc earned a “unique opportunity” to have a main event championship match, but that was taken away from him by Dario Cueto. Thanks to the Dial of Doom, Son of Havoc gets the opportunity he has been waiting for.

Son of Havoc is a total package. He is incredibly agile and strong, for his size. Even though Havoc is an incredible athlete, he is about half the size of Matanza. On top of that, Matanza has shown agility of his own with standing moonsaults and shooting star presses.

Son of Havoc gives the best showing anyone on the roster could have, but Matanza’s size kept him in the game. After popping Havoc up in the air, Matanza hits the Wrath of the Gods to retain the Lucha Underground Championship and keep his undefeated streak alive. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Matanza Cueto

Backstage Segment
The Worldwide Underground (Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, PJ Black, and Taya) enter Dario Cueto’s office and Johnny Mundo demands a Lucha Underground Championship match.

At Ultima Lucha Dos, Angélico cost Mundo, Evans, and Black the Trios Championships, so later that night they seriously injured his leg. This didn’t convince Dario Cueto to give Mundo a Lucha Underground Championship match, but he has something for Taya. Since she was the only one to win at Ultima Lucha Dos, Taya will get a Gift of the Gods Championship match against Sexy Star tonight.

In-ring Segment
Ivelisse is in the ring to already issue a challenge to Catrina. Although we don’t know the date yet, the self-professed “baddest bitch in the building” challenges Catrina to a match at Ultima Lucha Tres. Catrina accepts, and one match for the huge event is already set.

Sexy Star (c) vs. Taya – Gift of the Gods Championship
Sexy Star and Taya had great success in Season 2 of Lucha Underground. Most recently, Sexy Star won the Gift of the Gods Championship at Ultima Lucha Dos, and Taya defeated Ivelisse in the same event.

During the match, The Worldwide Underground look to help out Taya, but Taya ends up hitting Johnny Mundo by accident. After being in complete shock, Sexy Star gets the roll-up victory. Winner, and STILL Gift of the Gods Champions: Sexy Star

After the match, The Worldwide Underground look to assault sexy star, but they are sent packing thanks to the Trios Champions (Fenix, Aerostar, and Drago).

Backstage Segment
Marty “The Moth” Martinez tells Dario Cueto that he wants to conquer the Temple, but Killshot is still not done with The Moth after his dogtags were stolen (and are still around The Moth’s neck). Cueto announces a match for next week that has never been done before: Marty “The Moth” Martinez vs. Killshot in a Weapons of Mass Destruction match. What that is exactly is unknown, but we can be sure that it will be violent.

Rey Mysterio vs. Pentagon Dark
To much surprise, Pentagon Dark failed to capture the Lucha Underground Championship from Matanza Cueto even though he went through a rigorous training regimen. With how long Mysterio has been competing in the Temple, it is surprising that this is the first time these two have faced each other.

During the match, Pentagon says something to Vampiro and the former master leaves the commentary table and heads to the back.

After hitting the 619, Rey Mysterio hits the Canadian Destroyer on Pentagon Dark to win the match. Winner: Rey Mysterio

After the match, Pentagon attacks Rey Mysterio from behind and looks to break the arm of the King of Lucha Libre. Right before Pentagon could complete his task, El Dragon Azteca Jr. rushes the ring to make the save.
