Memphis is placed on three years of probation by the NCAA, but is not banned from tournaments

The NCAA did not penalize Tigers coach Penny Hardaway or impose an NCAA Tournament suspension, but Memphis was given three years of probation, a public reprimand, and a fine on Tuesday. The NCAA has charged Memphis with seven alleged breaches, including lack of institutional control, head coach accountability, and failure to supervise, totaling four Level I, two Level II, and four of the most serious offenses. After hiring Hardaway as the men’s basketball coach for the Tigers, Memphis failed to further educate him or keep track of him as an athletics booster, according to the Independent Accountability Review Panel. The panel determined that Memphis gave players and prospects unpermitted privileges, including meals and publicity. In addition, the panel found that Memphis obstructed justice by delaying the delivery of requested records, although it determined that these were Level II and III offenses.
