Fame and fortune, a place that’s having crime problems … and leaving a bunch of valuable stuff in your car. For former Yankees superstar and ESPN broadcaster Alex Rodriguez, that was a bad combination. Burglars stole half a million dollars’ worth of Rodriguez’s jewelry and electronics, as well as some personal items, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

Rodriguez was in San Francisco for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball telecast of the Giants-Phillies game. At the time, he was using a rental SUV that was parked a few blocks from Oracle Park.

A big problem

San Francisco has had a recent increase in crime and petty theft, police say. The Chronicle reported that vehicle owners reported 2,150 break-ins in July. The newspaper went so far as to call it a “rolling epidemic.”

But none of those cases were as high profile as that of Rodriguez. The superstar, who hit 696 career home runs under the shadow steroid use, has gained even more fame after his career as a broadcaster and Jennifer Lopez’s boyfriend.

He declined to say what thieves took and only called it “an unfortunate situation.” But the Chronicle reported the thieves took mostly jewelry and electronics.

Another accident

It was a rough weekend all around for the Sunday Night Baseball crew. Another motorist hit analyst Jessica Mendoza in her car from the rear, and she suffered minor injuries. She didn’t appear on the ESPN telecast but expects to be OK to return next week.

Rodriguez expressed thanks there was surveillance video of the incident. Therefore, police are hopeful they can catch the bad guy.

“I am saddened that several items that were of a personal nature and irreplaceable with sentimental value were taken,” Rodriguez said, according to ESPN.com. “I am encouraged that local law enforcement has security footage of the crime and are doing all they can to get the items back.”
