Gleyber Torres must be sad the New York Yankees have only two games left against the Baltimore Orioles. That’s because the Yankees young infielder has dominated the O’s like few players have ever done against one opponent.

Indeed, Torres homered against Baltimore again Monday in the second game of a doubleheader. That gives him 13 homers for the season in 17 games against the Orioles, tied for second-best in a single season ever. And he’s actually only played in 16 of those games.

Torres is tied with Roger Maris, Joe Adcock, Hank Sauder and Jimmie Foxx for second, behind only Lou Gehrig, who hit 14 homers against the Cleveland Indians in 1936.

Making history

Torres is having a very good season by any measure. After all, he’s hitting .283/.349/.524 with 26 home runs, 69 RBIs and 74 runs scored. But none of those totals are in the top five in the American League.

The only one in the top 10 is the home runs. And that’s because a full half of his dingers have come against one team!

For all his success, Torres was a man of few words Monday night.

“I take all the opportunities they give and then just do damage,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

The other side

All of this history, of course, is no fun for the Orioles. They’re the team having to watch the ball sail over the fence over and over again.

It has gotten to the point where Monday night, O’s manager Brandon Hyde intentionally walked Torres with two runners on in a five-run game in the eighth inning.

“I just kind of had enough,” Hyde said. “We’re making him look like a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Granted, the Orioles have given up more home runs than any team in history to this point in the season. If only you could face them all the time.

Indeed, if Torres had numbers against the every team like he does against the Orioles? Why, he’d finish the year with 124 round-trippers. And that’s crazy.
