Monday NFL Free Agency Round-Up

Hunt is moving to Indiana.

There wasn’t a ton of action on the NFL free agent front Monday, but that’s a good thing. We still haven’t caught up from everything that happened last weekend yet.

Hot off the presses, the Indianapolis Colts just signed former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Margus Hunt. Financial and length details haven’t been disclosed, but Hunt will add some depth to a Colts’ front in dire need of it. Last year he appeared in 15 games with the Bengals and recorded 14 tackles and two pass defenses.

The Colts also announced they re-signed running back Robert Turbin to a two-year, $4.1 million deal.  Turbin carried the ball 47 times for 164 yards, averaging 3.5 yards a carry for the colts last season, but he it was the red zone where he did the real heavy lifting, scoring seven touchdowns. Turbin added 26 catches for 179 yards and a score.

Indianapolis added outside linebacker John Simon from the Houston Texans with a three-year, $13.5 million deal. Simon had 51 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two passes defended for the Texans in 2016.

Earlier in the free agency period, the Colts brought in former New England Patriots defensive end Jabaal Sheard with a three-year, $25.5 million contract. Sheard started eight games for the Patriots last season and played in 15, recording 33 tackles, five sacks and four pass defenses.

New Orleans Saints

In the deluge action from the weekend, I never got a chance to go over the Saints’ moves outside of the Brandin Cooks trade.

First up, the Saints re-signed defensive tackle Nick Fairley to a four-year, $28 million contract. Last year Fairley had 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

New Orleans also added a couple of players by subtracting them from an NFC South rival. The Saints brought in wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and middle linebacker A.J. Klein from the Carolina Panthers. Ginn’s contract is for three years and $11 million. Last season Ginn caught 54 passes for 752 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned kicks and punts.

Klein made his name stepping in well for concussed middle linebacker Luke Keuchly. Klein got a four-year, $24 million deal with the Saints. Last season he  recorded 31 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles and one pass defense.

And lastly the Saints shored up their offensive line adding Detroit Lions guard Larry Warford with a four-year, $34 million contract.

Other moves

The Denver Broncos brought in a defensive end for their rotation, signing former New Orleans Saints lineman Kasim Edebali. Last year Edibali played in all 16 games, started one and recorded eight tackles, a sack and a pass defense.

As expected, the Philadelphia Eagles have cut backup quarterback Chase Daniel. Daniel saw action in just one game last season, completing the only pass he threw for 16 yards. Daniel, by virtue of his talent and experience, immediately shakes up the free agent quarterback rankings.

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought in former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan on a free agent contract. Logan’s deal is for one year with no financial details released yet. Last year Logan started and played in 13 games for the Eagles, recording 24 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

The Los Angeles Chargers continue shucking offensive line contracts, this time cutting offensive tackle King Dunlap. The Chargers will eat $3.25 million in dead salary cap with the move. Dunlap started 12 games at left tackle for the Chargers last season.

Running back Andre Ellington has re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals on a one-year deal. Last season Ellington carried the ball just 34 times for 96 yards and caught 12 passes for 85 yards.

The Buffalo Bills added former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Jeremy Butler on a one-year deal. Buter caught just two passes for 11 yards last season. The Bills also added former Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Ryan Davis. Davis played in nine games and recorded four tackles and a fumble recovery last season. He got a two-year contract.

Guard Chris Scott will remain a part of the Carolina Panthers’ offensive line with a one-year contract.

The New York Giants re-signed guard John Jerry with a three-year, $10 million contract.
