UCLA Bruins vs. Oregon Ducks Betting Preview

In this Saturday Pac-12 game, Oregon is labeled as the heavy favorite and is currently giving up 10 points. In order to take the home favorite, moneyline bettors would currently need to spend $400 to win $100 back on the Ducks (-400). The Bruins are getting +300 moneyline odds. Should one program can create a bunch of points early it’ll create a decent betting scenario in-game. Oddsmakers have set the over/under (O/U) at 58.5 points.

Sharp bettors are hammering the Bruins, as the opening line was -13. The game’s over/under has yet to move after being set initially at 58.5.

The underwhelming Bruins are 3-5 against the spread (ATS) and are down 7.2 units so far in 2018. They’ve been a decent under bet and have posted an O/U record of 3-5. The Ducks are down 3.0 units for moneyline bettors this season. They’re 3-5 ATS and also have an O/U record of 3-5.

The Bruins are 2-6 straight up (SU), including 2-3 SU against conference opponents. The Ducks are 5-3 SU overall and 2-3 SU in conference play.

When these two squads faced one another last year, UCLA earned the win 31-14.

The Bruins are reeling from a 41-10 defeat to Utah last week. Wilton Speight completed only 20-of-40 passes for 164 yards and two interceptions. Joshua Kelley (90 yards on 16 rush attempts, one TD) led the running attack. Theo Howard (six receptions, 51 yards) and Caleb Wilson (five catches, 62 yards) handled the receiving duties in the defeat.

One game ago, Arizona knocked off this Oregon team by a score of 44-15. The Ducks defense allowed the Wildcats to run for 276 yards on 51 rush attempts, including two rush TDs. J.J. Taylor was a force to be reckoned with, putting up 212 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 30 attempts for Arizona. For Oregon, Justin Herbert completed 24-of-48 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Herbert (31 rushing yards on six attempts) handled the running game as Jaylon Redd (six receptions, 33 yards) and Dillon Mitchell (six catches, 69 yards, one TD) led the pass-catching attack in the loss.

In terms of offensive play-calling, each squad sports a strikingly similar (54-46) run-pass ratio on the season. The Bruins have produced 148 rush yards per game (including 158 per game versus Pac-12 opponents) and have 11 scores on the ground this year. The Ducks are averaging 175 rushing yards per game (151 in conference) and have 17 total rush TDs.

It appears that the Ducks might hold an advantage in all aspects of the ground game, as their backfield has logged 4.3 yards per carry while their defense has allowed 3.6 yards per rush attempt to opponents. The Bruins have registered 4.0 yards per carry while allowing a YPC of 4.6 to opponents.

The Bruins offensive scheme has tallied 199 yards per contest through the air overall (204 per game versus conference opposition) and has eight passing TDs so far. The Ducks have put up 262 pass yards per game (245.8 against Pac-12 foes) and have 20 total pass scores.

On the defensive side of the ball, UCLA should have the upper hand when it comes to limiting the pass. The team has allowed 209 rush yards and 222 pass yards per game. The Oregon D has allowed 243.3 yards per game to opposing passers and 136.3 yards per game on the ground. Both teams allow similar adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) to opponents, as the Bruins have given up an ANY/A of 6.07 to opposing QBs, while the Ducks are yielding an ANY/A of 5.93.

Passing-wise, Speight has put up 209 yards this season, and has completed 54 percent of his 52 attempts with zero scores through the air and three interceptions. Speight’s got a 1.15 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number sits at 4.20 over the past two games.

Justin Herbert has completed 130-of-216 passes for 1,799 yards, 19 TDs and six INTs for Oregon. His ANY/A stands at 8.21 for the season and 4.65 over his last two games.
