New York Mets Slay San Francisco Giants, 13-1

So tonight the New York Mets opened up a can of whoop a… well, let’s just say that the Mets slayed the San Francisco Giants and took home a 13 to 1 victory after the kill.

The Mets came into the game winning six straight games, which is the club’s longest winning streak since capturing eight consecutive games from September 7-14, 2015. It’s also the longest current winning streak right now in the league and the Mets just extended it another game. They are now 10-1 in their last 11 games and have won 12 of their last 14 games. New York has won four straight series, including two straight series sweeps.

Tonight was pretty much a stress-free game for the Mets as well as starter Steven Matz, who came into the game 2-1 and earned his third victory after pitching six innings. The Mets hit singles, doubles and, yes, even a grand slam. Just a few weeks ago we were talking about the Mets finding their stride and now opponents are starting to wonder when that stride was going to stop.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Mets had 12 guys cross the plate, with a special nod to the hitting of Yeonis Cespedes, who came back into the game after sitting out for five with a bruised thigh. He set a record with six RBIs – a two-run single and a grand slam against reliever Mike Broadway. (The last grand slam was only 7 days ago by Curtis Granderson against Bud Norris of Atlanta). What an impressive way for Cespedes to return to the lineup.

New York Mets coach Terry Collins was quoted as calling the game, “One of those freaky things that you don’t ever expect to have against a team as good as the Giants,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Can’t say that anymore Coach. Start expecting it.

The New York Mets ended up with 12 hits and had 6 walks. They struck out seven times.

David Wright was charged with one error at the beginning of the game.

However, let’s focus on these stats:

Not including tonight, the Mets have hit 28 home runs in their last 12 games after just two in their first eight games and are fifth in the league with 30 home runs. Tied for the league home run leader is Neil Walker. And let’s not forget about the pitching staff, which ranks fourth in the league with a 2.91 ERA, has allowed eight home runs (leader) and has 194 strikeouts, the third-most in the majors.

Now that’s what we’re talking about.

Tonight the Mets started a stretch of 17 consecutive games. They are now 14-7 and head back onto the field at 4:05pm EST for their second game against the Giants. Right hander Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants who is 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA will face Mets right handed pitcher Jacob deGrom who comes in 2-0, with a strong 1.54 ERA.
