It’s an illness most of us deal with in middle school, but for New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, it’ll cost him at least one NFL start. The second-year signal-caller was diagnosed with mononucleosis and will sit out Monday night’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Darnold is also expected to miss the Jets’ Week 3 contest against the New England Patriots.

Backup Trevor Siemien is set to start for New York against the Browns.

Mono usually isn’t serious and has mild, flu-like symptoms like fever, fatigue, sore throat and sore muscles, but can take about two-to-four weeks to get over. After the Pats game, the Jets have a bye in Week 4.

“I don’t want to put predictions on anything,” New York head coach Adam Gase said, talking about Darnold’s health. “I’m just glad we’ve got the bye week when we do.”

If there are no issues in Darnold’s recovery, he should be set to return on Oct. 6 when the team travels to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles.

Guice wants second opinion

Derrius Guice earned the Washington Redskins starting running back job after battling back from a knee injury. Now, he’s battling to not let another knee injury take it away.

After getting hurt against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, Guice appeared to be headed to injured reserve. He’s doing his best to avoid it and will see Dr. James Andrews, a specialist in Florida, in hopes of saving his season.

Guice could be under the knife today, getting his meniscus trimmed as he tries to salvage most of the season. Either way, he’ll likely be out four-to-six weeks.

Guice was a second round pick out of LSU last season by the Redskins. He missed all last year with a torn ACL. Sunday, he carried the ball 10 times for 18 yards and caught three passes for 20 yards before leaving the game.
