Earlier this offseason, Big 12 officials clarified their stance on opponents flashing the ‘Horns Down’ hand sign when playing Texas. While the gesture wouldn’t be penalized in all circumstances, it would be flagged if it was directed at an opponent or if it was held for an extended period of time. Those rules don’t apply to things off the field though, so the Oklahoma Sooners are having a little fun with their rivals to the south.

Last night, Oklahoma announced that it was introducing a new ‘Horns Down’ donut. This interesting confection doesn’t look like much, but it will certainly get under the skin of their rivals and it is sure to be a popular item throughout the season.

There’s no doubt that it would be an incredibly popular menu item when Oklahoma squared off against Texas in the Red River Showdown, but the ‘Horns Down’ donut will only be available in Norman this season. That game is held at a neutral site in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, and Longhorns fans would not be okay with it being for sale there.

The Oklahoma-Texas rivalry has been one of the best in college football for years. The general rule of thumb is that the underdog will have the upper hand, but it has been incredibly even over the last 15 years. In that stretch, the Sooners have won the Red River Showdown 8 times, while the Longhorns have won the rivalry game 7 times.

That rivalry has lasted long after players have finished their college careers, and Baker Mayfield made sure to sound off on the ‘Horns Down’ gesture earlier this summer. He let it be known that he believes the ‘Horns Down’ should be able to flashed without penalty throughout the year, equating it to any other celebration.

Regardless, we’re hoping that this new donut leads to other teams trolling their rivals with menu items.
