USC News: QB Jack Sears Decides to Transfer

Earlier this week, the writing was on the wall that USC quarterback Jack Sears would transfer. Head coach Clay Helton released the Trojans’ full depth chart, and Sears was listed as the fourth-string quarterback. He was behind JT Daniels, Kedon Slovis, and Matt Fink, so he made the decision to transfer and play out his college career elsewhere.

Jack Sears is a redshirt sophomore, but he will become immediately eligible to play for any school in the country at the end of the fall. He is on pace to graduate in December, and he will look to move on shortly afterward.

Sears has never been able to make much of a dent in USC’s depth chart. He enrolled as a four-star recruit from southern California in 2017, but he only appeared in one game during his time on campus.

After spring practice, Sears was listed as the primary backup to JT Daniels. His experience seemed to give him an edge in new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell’s scheme, but it appears he really fell behind after the team began practicing again in July.

When Harrell was asked what went into the decision, he said:

“Obviously the physical tools help. I think at any level really, either you can or you can’t play physically. And when you kinda get to that level….and once you get to that, ‘he’s good enough’ level it’s all between the ears,” said Harrell. “Especially in our offense, but I think in any offense, there is going to be certain guys that aren’t good enough to play at your level. Once you weed those people out, the people that all can play at your level, it’s all about who can process it and who can make decisions quickly. Who can react full speed to people moving and things changing at a very fast pace. Like I said I think we had four guys that physically were good enough to play at this level and JT just processed it a lot quicker than the other (three) and that’s really what it came down to.”

There are now just three scholarship quarterbacks on USC’s roster heading into 2019.
