Seahawks News: Seattle Cuts All 3 Back Up Quarterbacks

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

There are teams that aren’t satisfied with their quarterback situations and then there’s the Seattle Seahawks. While they’re obviously thrilled to have Russell Wilson, an unquestioned franchise quarterback and Super Bowl winner, locked down with a long-term contract, their back ups for the 2019 season were a problem.

So much so that Seattle cut all three of them. As of Sunday afternoon, Wilson is the only QB on the Seahawks’ roster.

On the firs roster cut-down day, Seattle put former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett and former Denver Broncos first round pick Paxton Lynch on the street, seemingly giving the back up nod to Geno Smith, a former starter for the New York Jets.

Sunday, Smith was loaded up into the catapult and fired into the sun, leaving the back up roster spot in Seattle blank.

The good news for Smith is, this may just be a roster maneuver for the Jadeveon Clowney trade with the Houston Texans. They need the spot for some reason and Smith has told reporters that he’ll re-sign with the Seahawks once all the official Clowney paperwork is filed.

Still, you can’t help but feel as if Seattle was in love with their situation they wouldn’t be so eager to put Smith out the door, even for a day or two. As sure as the former Jets second rounder is of his return, I’m not. The Seahawks would be smart to let all the QB cuts and acquisitions take place before bringing Smith back. The Pittsburgh Steelers could be looking to move back up Joshua Dobbs for the right price and he would be a much better fit in Seattle.
