UFC 226 Results – The UFC 226 pay-per-view went down last night and Daniel Cormier stopped Stipe Miocic late in round one to grab the UFC heavyweight title.

The fight was labeled a superfight as  Miocic was making the fourth defense of his belt against Cormier, who held the 205 pound title and was moving up in weight. The fight started out with Miocic pressuring Cormier with strikes, though several skirmishes and clinches ended with neither fighter having a definitive advantage. Then late in the round Cormier scored with a short punch that sent Miocic down hard. A few follow-up punches earned the referee’s stoppage, and the ref then had to explain to a pissed Miocic that it was over. It was a good stop because it appeared that Miocic was out, but he gathered himself rather quickly and found himself no longer champion.

Cormier now becomes the second fighter after Conor McGregor to hold two UFC title belts in different weight classes at the same time. Cormier is now 21-1 in MMA with an additional no contest, and he is now firmly in the “Greatest of all Time” discussion.

There are two points that come with Cormier’s win that bear examining.

After the win, the UFC had Brock Lesnar enter the ring and Cormier was calling the pro wrestler out on mic. The UFC sees Lesnar’s return for the end of the year as a big thing, as the former champion has been involved in some of the UFC’s biggest PPV events. Cormier wants the payday of course, and Lesnar himself appears to be freeing himself up from his latest WWE run.

Did we forget about Miocic, the pissed former champion who was still in the arena when Lesnar popped up in the octagon? Miocic is a hard working Ohio fireman, but he is also the UFC heavyweight champion with the most successful title defenses. It goes without saying that Miocic is going to want a rematch, and what should not go unnoticed is that he deserves one. Though he was dropped by Cormier, it is not like he was overwhelmed in the fight, he was very much in it until the end.

Lesnar has spent the last few years in WWE on a part time schedule and with a very limited range of in-ring moves. He has become boring in WWE and the fact is that the lockerroom there hate him. The UFC seems gung-ho on doing Cormier vs Lesnar, but are they sure Lesnar at 40 years old is going to be the draw he once was?

The other question here is whether Cormier really belongs in the “GOAT” discussion. The answer to that is a resounding “Yes.” Jones is not bigger than the sport, and at 22-1 the records are comparable.

The bottom line with Jon Jones is that through his own shortcomings, he has fought just 3 times since the start of 2015. If he wasn’t such a waste of talent, Jones would have remained active and likely it would have been him in Cormier’s spot now. Jones has done nothing but piss away the prime years of his career, and he will never get those back. Being the “GOAT” is about what you did, and Cormier grabbed the heavyweight belt. The fact that Jones “could have” no longer matters, because Jones isn’t doing anything at this time but running his mouth and embarrassing himself.
