Texas Tech Red Raiders at TCU Horned Frogs Betting Preview

Texas Tech is playing the role of underdog and is currently getting 9 points in this Big 12 game. The Red Raiders are also receiving +270 moneyline odds while the Horned Frogs are -350. Should one squad can create a bunch of points early, it’ll likely produce a reasonable live betting scenario.

The game’s line opened at -11, but square bettors are siding with the Red Raiders.

The surprising Red Raiders are 3-2 against the spread (ATS) and have gained 4.1 units so far in 2018. The team’s posted an O/U record of 4-1. The Horned Frogs have lost 1.4 units this season. The team is 1-3-1 ATS and owns an O/U record of 1-3.

The Red Raiders are 3-2 straight up (SU), including 1-1 SU against Big 12 opponents. The Horned Frogs are 3-2 SU overall and are also 1-1 SU in conference play.

When these two squads met last year, TCU won soundly 27-3.

The Red Raiders look to bounce back after a 42-34 defeat to West Virginia on September 29. The passing game could’ve been more effective as the Red Raiders completed 25-of-47 passes for 295 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jett Duffey went 16-for-27 for 172 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while Alan Bowman completed nine-of-20 for 123 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Duffey (86 rushing yards on 15 attempts, one TD) also spearheaded the ground attack. Antoine Wesley (eight receptions, 110 yards, one TD) and De’Quan Bowman (six catches, 54 yards, one TD) handled the receiving duties in the defeat.

TCU takes the field on Thursday having just earned a 17-14 win over Iowa State. The defense let the Cyclones run for 119 yards on 28 rush attempts, along with one rushing TD. David Montgomery had a productive showing in the loss for Iowa State, accounting for 101 rushing yards and a score on 21 attempts. For TCU, Shawn Robinson completed 21-of-29 passes for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Sewo Olonilua (66 rushing yards on 16 attempts) and Darius Anderson (42 yards on 16 carries) handled the running game as Jalen Reagor (six receptions, 67 yards) and Jarrison Stewart (five catches, 22 yards) led the pass-catching attack in the win.

Texas Tech has run the ball on 47.4 percent of its offensive possessions this year while TCU has an overall rush percentage of 53.7 percent. The Red Raiders have produced 184 rush yards per game (including 196 per game versus Big 12 opponents) and have 18 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Horned Frogs are logging 187 rushing yards per game (129 in conference) and have eight total rush TDs.

If 2018 numbers can translate to this game, then the Horned Frogs ought to have an advantage in terms of RB efficiency, as their running backs has logged 4.7 yards per carry while the defense has allowed a YPC of 3.5 to opponents. The Red Raiders have ran for 4.2 yards per carry while allowing 4.4 yards per rush attempt to opponents.

The Red Raiders offense has logged a superb 408 yards per contest in the air overall (346 per game versus conference opposition) and has 13 passing scores so far. The Horned Frogs have produced 228 pass yards per outing (206.5 against Big 12 foes) and have eight total pass TDs.

Defensively, Texas Tech has allowed opponents to rush for an average of 146 yards and pass for 301 yards per game. The TCU D has allowed 178.0 yards per game to opposing passers and 125.6 yards per game to opposing runners. The Horned Frogs are giving up an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of just 5.06 to opponents, while the Red Raiders have allowed a 7.26 ANY/A.

Passing-wise, Bowman is up to 1,283 yards this year. He’s connected on 67 percent of his 153 attempts with nine scores through the air and only one interception. Bowman has a 9.15 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number is 6.06 over the past two games.

Antoine Wesley (523 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns this season), Ja’Deion High (327 receiving yards, two receiving TDs) and Demarcus Felton (84 rush yards, two rush TDs) have all played big roles recently.

In the home locker room, Shawn Robinson has connected on 78-of-122 passes for 826 yards, six TDs and four INTs. Robinson’s ANY/A sits at 5.81 for the season and 4.63 over his last two games.

Jalen Reagor (263 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown this season), Sewo Olonilua (207 rush yards, one rush TD) and KaVontae Turpin (160 receiving yards, one receiving TD) have combined to account for 403 yards from scrimmage over the last two games.
