So You Think You Can Dance: 8/21 Recap

So You Think You Can Dance

To begin this week’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Jensen and Jay Jay are dancing what’s been described as a “sexy, seductive” jazz routine together. Great routine, in my opinion. Nigel tells Jensen that jazz is not her style, but that she did great. Twitch said he doesn’t know what this couple can’t do.

Cole’s solo to Jailhouse Rock is next and it was good, but I wouldn’t call it spectacular.

Gennesy and Slavik are up next as a duo and I think that Slavik is coming on very strong in this competition. They are doing a Mandy Moore contemporary routine that has a lot of lifts and tricks. Gennesy calls Slavik her soulmate. It was a beautiful routine and a very strong performance for both of them. Twitch says he loves how they dive into the dance. Mary calls them the biggest surprise couple on the show and says they shouldn’t call themselves “under the radar.”

Hannahlei’s solo is fierce and I think she’s emerging as a front runner in this competition.

Magda and Darius are dancing hip-hop as wolves so this, I hope, is equally fierce. Honestly, I think that in a dance like this Magda should tie her hair up because it’s constantly in her face. I’m not a big fan of the choreography and I don’t think it’s going well, but I’ll see what the judges say. Twitch says the execution wasn’t great, especially for Magda. On the other hand, Mary felt like Magda was fighting for it and had determination. Nigel felt the same as Twitch.

Jay Jay dances his solo and we all know this guy can fly and dance. I think he’s trying a little too hard actually. Slavik dances his solo next and this guy is growing on me as a front runner for the men – an unexpected frontrunner.

Hannahlei and Cole are now dancing to Travis Wall’s first-ever Broadway routine. I love the opening already. I can definitely see Cole on Broadway after this — great facial expressions and Gene Kelly-ish floppiness about him.  All of the judges absolutely loved it.

Magda’s solo is up next and she’s working hard at redeeming herself.

Genessy and Slavik dance jazz, Slavik’s first jazz piece. This kid is absolutely rocking it. The routine seems more jazz-hip-hop to me. Their timing is ever-so-slightly off right now, but it’s still a great routine and I’m not typically a Ray Lepper dance fan. The judges keep teasing them about a romantic connection. Twitch tells Slavik to stay on beat (hey, maybe I should be a judge).

Magda and Darius dance their couples contemporary routine with a rope so this should be interesting and I think Magda is being tested. This is a hard routine for sure and so far they are doing a great job. Mary was seriously impressed with Magda’s performance. Nigel said that the concept overwhelmed the content of the dance and that there wasn’t a ton of dancing. Mary debates it with him. We’ll see if this hurts him.

Jensen’s solo is of course this sexy samba – seen this before.

Jensen and Jay Jay are now dancing hip-hop and they literally they threw in the kitchen sink, well, the kitchen, with all the props they are working with. I actually like Jensen in this routine and am not really watching Jay Jay much. This is so far out of Jensen’s comfort zone and she’s owning it. Her facial expressions are great. Twitch loved it because they worked great as a couple but the routine also showed glimpses of the pair’s individuality.

Darius’ solo is up and the crowd is going nuts for every movement he makes. He’s amazing and we know it.

Hannahlei and Cole are doing the cha cha and it’s about “lust not love” say the choreographers. They are dancing it well, but it doesn’t thrill me. I guess in this case I’m wrong because all four judges were on their feet. Mary told Cole it’s the best he ever danced. Nigel tells Cole it’s been his show tonight.

Gennesy dances her solo next and she’s shining.

The group dances round out the show and we get our results. Girls results first:

Jensen is safe.
Magda is in the bottom four.
Gennesy is in the bottom four.
Hannahlei is safe.

Now the guys:
Jay Jay is safe.
Cole is in the bottom four.
Slavik is safe.
Darius is in the bottom four.

Who went home this week on So You Think You Can Dance?
Cole and Magda have been eliminated. In the past, I thought it was Cole’s to lose, but Slavik has come on so strong.

So we have these dancers left on So You Think You Can Dance:
Gennesy
Hannahlei
Jensen
Slavik
Darius
Jay Jay

I’d put my money on Hannahlei and Slavik to be the final two in this season of So You Think You Can Dance.
