Toronto Blue Jays at Miami Marlins Betting Preview 08/31/18

The Miami Marlins are trying to avoid losing their fourth consecutive game as they play host to the Toronto Blue Jays at Marlins Park. Fox SportsNet Florida will broadcast this interleague matchup and the game gets underway at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Toronto Blue Jays at Miami Marlins Odds

Vegas has listed Toronto (-115) as the favorite over Miami (+105). The total sits at 8.5 runs and bettors can wager on the over for +100 and the under for -120. Runline odds sit at +130 for taking the Blue Jays -1.5 runs and -150 for the Marlins +1.5.

The Marlins are 69-65 against the spread (ATS), but only 53-81 straight up (SU). They’ve lost 2.3 units for moneyline bettors and 10.1 units (ATS). The Blue Jays, on the other hand, have gone 60-73 SU this year and are 56-77 ATS. In total, the team’s lost 10.9 units for bettors taking the moneyline and 31.9 units ATS.

Miami games have an over/under record of 67-63-4 in 2018. Toronto has been a decent over bet with a total record of 69-56-8.

Right-hander Aaron Sanchez is projected to start for Toronto. Sanchez is 3-5 with a 4.95 ERA and 69 strikeouts. He has yet to face the Marlins this year and did not record a start against them in 2017, either.

The Marlins are turning to righty Dan Straily (5-6, 4.35 ERA), who has 91 strikeouts and 51 walks to his credit as well as a 1.37 WHIP. Straily did not record a start against the Blue Jays in 2017.

Miami’s pitchers have given up 5.1 runs per game overall in 2018 as a unit. The club’s starters have a 4.48 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings. The bullpen has a 5.23 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 8.0 K/9.

The Miami offense is putting up 3.7 runs per outing, including 4.6 per game over its last 10 games and 3.4 per game over its last five. The team’s hit .209/.290/.367 over its last five games and is 2-3 SU during that span.

The Marlins’ offense has been led by second baseman Starlin Castro and third baseman Brian Anderson. Castro is slashing .286/.338/.409 with 11 home runs, 49 RBIs and 71 runs scored, and Anderson is hitting .276 with 10 homers, 56 RBIs and 73 runs.

In the other dugout, Toronto’s pitching staff allowed 5.2 runs per game and its starters own a 5.18 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 7.58 K/9. The bullpen has managed an ERA of 4.49, along with a K/9 of 9.04.

The Blue Jays offense has slashed .245/.317/.430 on its way to 4.5 runs scored per game this season, including 4.6 runs per game over the team’s last 10 games and 4.2 per game over the team’s last five contests (1-4 SU).

First baseman Justin Smoak and right fielder Kevin Pillar continue to lead Toronto’s hitters. Smoak is slashing .249/.357/.464 with 21 home runs, 64 RBIs and 58 runs scored, while Pillar is slashing .256/.284/.423 with 11 homers, 51 RBIs, 54 runs and 13 stolen bases.
