Ultima Lucha Dos Preview & Predictions

This Wednesday is huge for Lucha Underground and fans of the Temple, as it kicks off Ultima Lucha Dos. Season One of Lucha Underground ended with the first Ultima Lucha, which was the huge two-week event that featured the best that Lucha Underground had to offer. In Season Two’s iteration of Ultima Lucha, things are only bigger and better, with an event that will span three weeks. I normally only predict WWE special events, but why not give a shot at predicting the least predictable promotion on television? Well, here we go.

Black Lotus vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr.
For over a year, we have seen Black Lotus in backstage segments where she tries to get justice for her father’s death. El Dragon Azteca Jr. has a similar search, trying to avenge the original El Dragon Azteca. Black Lotus thinks that the original El Dragon Azteca killed her parents, and El Dragon Azteca Jr. thinks that Black Lotus killed his mentor. Whatever the truth may be, Dario Cueto has used this to his advantage, pitting both of them against each other. Because of both competitors looking to destroy each other, this might be the (second) most brutal match of the night.

Prediction:
Because of how long we have seen Black Lotus without her competing, this would be a great payoff to give her the win over El Dragon Azteca Jr. Even though seeing Black Lotus fail would make for an interesting story, I think that she will win in her debut. Winner: Black Lotus

Taya vs. Ivelisse
Both of these impressive female luchadores have rubbed each other the wrong way on multiple occasions over the past few months. Ever since Taya debuted in The Temple, she has had the arrogance of someone who thinks that she is the best woman in Lucha Underground. However, “The Baddest Bitch in the Building” is not going to let Taya claim her status as the alpha female. In this match, we will find out who can truly claim that title (even though Sexy Star, Kobra Moon, and Mariposa are also in the Temple).

Prediction:
Ivelisse has had great success in Lucha Underground. She was the only woman to compete for the Lucha Underground Championship, and she held the Trios Championships with Angélico and Son of Havoc. Taya however, has been quite the workhorse over the last couple of months, and this win is a perfect reward for someone who has shown her ability. Winner: Taya

Prince Puma vs. Rey Mysterio
When Rey Mysterio entered the Temple alongside El Dragon Azteca Jr., he took Prince Puma under his wing for a brief period. During this time, Mysterio, Azteca, and Puma won (and lost) the Trios Championships. Puma is the franchise of Lucha Underground, which showed in his Lucha Underground Championship reign that lasted for practically the entirety of Season One (the reign ended in the very last match of Ultima Lucha to Mil Muertes). Will the franchise prove his status, or will the king of lucha libre live up to his legacy?

Prediction:
Rey Mysterio will work really well in the Temple if he plays the same role that Chris Jericho plays in WWE. His work should be to help improve the younger talent and put them over. With this being a very lucha libre focused wrestling promotion, having Puma go over Mysterio is the best way for him to transition from “Prince” to “El Rey.” Winner: Prince Puma

Cage vs. The Mack vs. Son of Havoc vs. Texano – 4 a Unique Opportunity
Last week, Dario Cueto announced that these four competitors will be competing for the “greatest unique opportunity ever.” There hasn’t been anything announced about the structure of the tournament and with such short notice, there isn’t really anything to preview.

Prediction:
Lucha Underground has been pushing Cage hard throughout Season Two, so I can see them giving him another opportunity to make it to the main event seen. Winner: Cage

Mil Muertes vs. King Cuerno – Deathmatch
Mil Muertes had a vicious feud with Matanza Cueto that ended in the Graver Consequences match for the Lucha Underground Championship. To end the match, Mil Muertes was put in a coffin that King Cuerno decided to place in his trophy room. Several weeks later, Muertes busted out of the coffin with a vengeance and King Cuerno set in his sights.

Prediction:
King Cuerno is perhaps one of the best all-around competitors that Lucha Underground has to offer. That being said, Lucha Underground tends to throw Cuerno under the bus, and keeping Muertes as a monster is exactly how they are going to do it. Winner: Mil Muertes

Night Claw vs. Daga vs. Sexy Star vs. Mariposa vs. Marty “The Moth” Martinez vs. Killshot vs. Siniestro de la Muerta – Gift of the Gods Championship
Two weeks ago, every single Aztec medallion was distributed to these seven competitors. Everybody except Night Claw won their respective matches to earn the medallions, but Night Claw was just handed the medallion by Dario Cueto. Whoever holds the Gift of the Gods Championship will be able to cash it in one week in advance for a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity.

Prediction:
Sexy Star and Mariposa have unfinished business, Marty “The Moth” Martinez is feuding with Killshot, and Daga has to deal with the distractions of Kobra Moon. This leaves Siniestro de la Muerta and the debuting Night Claw. Siniestro de la Muerta seems to just be thrown into this match, which gives me the idea that Night Claw will be the second debuting luchador to have a huge impact. Winner, and NEW Gift of the Gods Champion: Night Claw

Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, & PJ Black (c) vs. Drago, Aerostar, & Fenix – Trios Championship
Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, and PJ Black won the Trios Championships from Mysterio, Puma, and Azteca Jr. with some sound underhanded strategy. With constant low blows behind the referee’s back, the Trios Champions have done a great job at keeping the titles so far. Fenix was originally to be the third man on Evans’s and Black’s team, but Mundo took him out to get the glory. Fenix looks to capture the Trios Championships alongside more trustworthy partners in Drago and Aerostar.

Prediction:
The Trios Championships have to be defended at the biggest event of the year, but this just seems thrown together. There was no context for why the challengers paired up, and the champions need the belts to stay interesting for now (except for Johnny Mundo). Winners, and STILL Trios Champions: Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, & PJ Black

Matanza Cueto (c) vs. Pentagon Jr. – Lucha Underground Championship
This match has the most buildup of any match on the card. Pentagon Jr. thought he could take down Matanza Cueto several months ago, but Dario Cueto had enough of Pentagon’s arrogance. Dario Cueto order his brother to break the back of Pentagon Jr., and it left Pentagon Jr. out of action for several weeks. Pentagon Jr. returned a few weeks ago to claim his revenge and destroy the man who broke his back. With Vampiro’s training, Pentagon Jr. has returned stronger than ever and he should be well-equipped be Matanza’s toughest opponent to date.

Prediction:
Pentagon Jr. has been so close to being “The Guy” (sorry Roman Reigns) in Lucha Underground multiple times. He has the fan popularity, the charisma, and the look of someone who will murder you without thinking twice about it (this is Lucha Underground we’re talking about after all). I think that this is the time that Matanza Cueto finally faces his first defeat, and Pentagon Jr. picks up the gold that he rightfully deserves. Winner, and NEW Lucha Underground Champion: Pentagon Jr.
