Mitch Johnson, head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, has been named the coach for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game. The selection comes in recognition of the Spurs’ recent performances and specifically after their 112-103 road win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday night.

Johnson is in his first full season as head coach of the Spurs. He was promoted to the role following his tenure as an assistant on the coaching staff, having stepped in for long-time head coach Gregg Popovich. Sunday’s win, which followed an early and logistically challenging day of travel that began in Charlotte and included a flight diversion to Atlanta, was crucial in securing Johnson’s spot as an All-Star Game coach.

In accordance with NBA tradition, All-Star Game coaches are selected based on team performance during the first half of the regular season. While the exact criteria may vary year to year, typically coaches from the top teams in each conference are chosen, with a restriction that prevents repeat selections in consecutive seasons. Johnson becomes one of the youngest coaches in recent NBA history to receive this honor in his initial season leading an NBA team.

The Spurs’ victory on Sunday marked a continuation of the team’s strong form throughout the season. Under Johnson’s leadership, San Antonio has shown cohesive on-court dynamics and steady development, particularly among its younger roster. Johnson has been credited with emphasizing player development, defensive intensity, and adaptability—elements that have contributed to the Spurs’ above-.500 record leading into the All-Star break.

The 2026 NBA All-Star Game is scheduled to be held later this month, and Johnson will lead the Western Conference team. This coaching assignment offers additional visibility for the Spurs’ current direction and highlights Johnson’s emergence as a promising figure in the league’s coaching ranks.
