Angels News: Former Mets Manager Mickey Callaway Named Pitching Coach

Obviously, Mickey Callaway was fired from the New York Mets managerial position on October 3rd. Now, it’s not that he was a bad manager during his two years in Queens. While manger of the Mets, he led the team to a 163-161 record. Typically, that’s not enough to get a guy fired; but the front office felt a change was needed.

However, Callaway is a phenomenal pitching coach. In fact, he was in charge of the Cleveland Indians’ bullpen during their World Series run of 2016. Now, he’s taking his talents to SoCal with Joe Maddon and the Los Angeles Angels.

Per Jon Heyman on twitter:

Slowly, the Angels are assembling a nice staff to go with the universes’s best player Mike Trout. USA Today was the first to report that Callaway would join the staff of new Angels manager Joe Maddon.

Moreover, the Angels could make a push at Gerrit Cole in the offseason. Aside from players feeling that he will get ‘Bryce Harper money’, it’s no secret that Cole wants to play on the West Coast in 2020 and beyond.

Certainly, that would give Callaway a nice piece at his disposal to work with. Remember, Callaway formerly worked with Corey Kluber during his Cy Young season of 2014.

Finally, this is a continued move to solidify an organization that has not been to the playoffs since 2014, when they were swept by the Kansas City Royals. Indeed, they have the best player in decades in the prime of his career. Now, it’s on them to surround him with the right people to make Trout’s second half of his career a legendary one.
