Following the reveal that Caleb Williams will appear on the Madden NFL 27 cover, here is a look back at the franchise’s cover athletes since 2000. The series has spanned more than 25 years and generated sizeable collections of physical boxes, though a digital photo album provides an easy way to revisit the lineup.

Madden NFL 2000 featured John Madden on the box for the final time during his lifetime as the franchise transitioned the spotlight to players. Madden NFL 2001 put Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George on the cover as the series jumped to PlayStation 2 and added teams from Europe. Madden NFL 2002 showcased Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper and marked the series’ debut on Xbox and GameCube. Marshall Faulk graced Madden NFL 2003; that edition also added Al Michaels alongside John Madden as play-by-play commentator. Madden NFL 2004 highlighted Michael Vick, whose in-game Speed rating of 95 made him notably difficult to catch and prompted balance changes in later entries.

Ray Lewis was the cover athlete for Madden NFL 2005, the year EA introduced the Hit Stick and a strong iteration of Franchise Mode. Donovan McNabb appeared on the Madden NFL 06 cover as the franchise dropped the small John Madden stickers on packaging; that release introduced Superstar Mode and was the first available on Xbox 360. Shaun Alexander was the face of Madden NFL 07 and served as the first cover athlete for the new PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii versions, while that edition introduced Lead Blocker Control and the Highlight Stick.

Vince Young was featured on Madden NFL 08, an entry that EA Sports paired with substantial improvements to the animation system to make star players feel more distinctive. Brett Favre appeared on Madden NFL 09 and was the first inactive player to be a cover athlete outside of John Madden. Madden NFL 10 listed Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald as the cover duo.

The lineup through Madden NFL 10 reflects hardware shifts and gameplay additions across the series. For fans tracing the covers from 2000 forward, those releases capture moments when the franchise both followed and influenced changes in football video games.
