Bob Myers, who is leading the Philadelphia 76ers’ search for a new general manager, said the franchise is seeking a collaborative executive focused on delivering a championship, the report says.
The move follows the team’s decision to part ways with Daryl Morey after six seasons. Morey reached the playoffs five times but never advanced past the second round, and the 76ers were swept by the New York Knicks this season, the report says. Morey’s regular-season record and playoff totals were noted in the announcement, per the report.
Myers, who joined the organization in October after a run as Golden State’s general manager, said the next GM must work well with others and help the club reach the right decisions. He emphasized a preference for candidates who demonstrate character and leadership and said he hopes to fill the post before the NBA draft begins on June 23, per the report.
The interview process will include an evaluation of the current roster and whether it can win as presently constructed, Myers said. The team is built around veterans Joel Embiid and Paul George and younger players Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe; the report notes ongoing concerns about Embiid’s availability due to injuries and that George missed 25 games this season because of a suspension.
Managing partner Josh Harris told reporters the organization approved the trade that sent Jared McCain away and that the move produced draft picks. Harris described the transaction as part of a larger plan whose outcome remains uncertain and expressed disappointment with how this season ended for the franchise, the report says. He also reiterated support for coach Nick Nurse and said the club is willing to exceed the league’s luxury tax when necessary.
Myers stressed that winning a title requires discomfort and sustained work and that championships are achieved by groups rather than individuals, the report says. The 76ers will rely on a collaborative approach within the front office as they search for the right executive to lead that effort.
